Imagine how generally awful it would be if we'd treated erstwhile enemies like Germany or Japan similarly (and that's without even mentioning our sorry track record meddling in Iranian affairs). He was always very open about discussing the Iranian hostage issue and his role in it. You'd be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable, patient and compassionate person. The man has dedicated his life - and considerable intelligence - to US diplomacy and in a sane world his voice would carry some weight. His wife (who is Persian) more-or-less adopted my wife during our time there as she is the same age as their daughter. As Conakry wasn't exactly the greatest city to stay in, the Embassy staff took the time to know the USAID contractors, Peace Corp professionals, Fulbright-ers, etc. It was nice to be accepted into their circle and meet them as people. Guinea wasn't a glamour post, so you got either the greenest or the most passionate diplomats. DanFnoreply@blogger.com
