Alert the Montana Tourism Board!

Another one of our fine gun-totin' states adding to our glorious reputation:
Raymond Dolin may need to change the title of his upcoming memoir. Dolin, 39, is hitchhiking across the United States to gather material for his book, "The Kindness of America." But on Saturday night, the West Virginia man was shot by a random passerby on the side of a highway
Now somebody did pick him up on the side of the highway so he could receive treatment -- therefore we can go back to patting ourselves on the back with a new slogan.
"America, we got your back...with a target on it".

It's a crime to look like a hippie in a red state.

There are reasons I stay west of the Divide and do not venture into the Republican hellhole that is eastern Montana. On the optimistc side, every county in the eastern part of the state has been significantly losing population every year for 40 years and may well return to the buffalo and prairie dogs in my lifetime.

a 'paserby' is rather benign for the anti social asshole w/ a gun.

In fairness, your description fits a large portion of the population of eastern Montana. Passerby is a bit more specific.

    Unkindess: shooting him
    Kindness: taking him to hospital
    Overall kindness: ???
Well, if some other kind stranger also pay for the massive (and likely uninsured) hospital bill that ensued, then it might tilt towards "kindness"? Otherwise, the whole incident is looking big in the "Unkindness" column

    Wait, I know this story...
    Luke 10:27 - 39
"A certain man was going down from
Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell
among robbers, who both stripped him
and beat him, and departed, leaving
him half dead. By chance a certain
priest was going down that way. When
he saw him, he passed by on the other
side. In the same way a Levite also,
when he came to the place, and saw
him, passed by on the other side. But
a certain Samaritan, as he traveled,
came where he was. When he saw him,
he was moved with compassion, came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring
on oil and wine. He set him on his
own animal, and brought him to an
inn, and took care of him. On the
next day, when he departed, he took
out two denarii, and gave them to the
host, and said to him, 'Take care of
him. Whatever you spend beyond that,
I will repay you when I return.' Now
which of these three do you think
seemed to be a neighbour to him who
    fell among the robbers?"

He said, "He who showed mercy on him."

Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."
