Woodward's both conservative and possibly alien or at least robotic. Occasionally you'll hear him sounding out ordinary words syllable by slow syllable as if they're completely unknown and/or baffling to him.
I'm guessing his subsequent career is driven by guilt over using Watergate to further his ambition. Deep down, he probably admired the son of a bitch at least a little -- Woodward wasn't above secrecy and deep background when it suited him.
