Republican Incompetence

David Brooks thinks that Republicans are just sick of the incompetence of the administration, from the Newshour:

JIM LEHRER: New subject, speaking of the White House, David, the fired U.S. attorneys and Attorney General Gonzales, is he on his way out?

DAVID BROOKS: I think he might be. What strikes me, aside from the substance of this, what strikes me about this story is, first of all, how much Republicans around the country, and especially on Capitol Hill, are sick of the White House and sick of them, of the Republicans having to wake up in the morning and try to defend something which they think is incompetent.

And so there's just a wall of hostility coming from Republicans now. And there's also, apparently, disputes within the -- between the White House and the attorney general.

And there's also the knowledge that, if they want to pursue substantive matters, having to do with national security and other things that go through the attorney general's office, this guy is not going to be able to do that in an effective way.

So I think all that adds up to the likelihood, regardless of the merits of this case, that they're going to have a new attorney general.

So the defense offered by good Republicans, as has been written by bigger names than me, is to lay it off on people who are not being Republican enough. So here's the deal David, Bush is all yours, Gonzalez is all yours, and so is Cheney, Wolfowitz, Feith, Ashcroft, Rice, Rumsfeld, Rove, Libby, Miers, and Samson. Every single stinking one of them. Yeah, they have done a lot of damage to the country, they have made the rich richer, and the poor poorer. They have caused the destruction of thousands of families of our soldiers forced to serve numerous tours of duty. They have made a mockery of our constitution and thumbed their noses at those that would stand-up to them--almost none of them Republican. They have frittered away whatever good will we had among our friends across the globe.

So David, we won't let you get away with pretending they aren't shoving down our throats the exact agenda you put them in office to inflict on us. Bush and company may have done gotten there under false pretenses by pretending to be moderate and playing on people's fears, but that was only to fool the electorate. Make no mistake, this is your agenda and these are your people.
