Well this is fun

Power went out in about 3/4th of my residence and flipping the fuse box did nothing. I am now blogging through the power of 30 feet of extension cord to my router. Good times.

You lost a phase, good doctor. It's unlikely but possible one of the two main breakers or main fuses went out. Check those first.

Next, you may want to go outside with a flashlight and carefully look if you've got a wire down. Doesn't look like there were any storms in DesMoines, so that's kind of unlikely, too.

If there are any sociable neighbors going out for their paper, you might want to ask them if they're having a problem, too. If yes, that would immediately narrow the problem down to the pole transformer, which the futility can fix.

Just some things to do before you call the electrician. Good luck.

I agree with the half a circuit idea but, WATCH OUT. A good friends home did this exact thing , it turned out to be a break at the Pole side of the wires. It happend a second time and Fried every computer in the house. Since it was pole side the utility had to replace his toys, expensieve project on your dime.
In Other Words: CALL FOR PROS TO HELP!
I'm a Warning you !

we need to overhaul the entire system and put in a supergrid.

it would save us money in the long run.
