Combs is Tasty

I do not care what you see. That Paul Wolfowitz is a handsome man.

Senator? Senator, can you tell us where the pinhead is?

Thank you Senator.

Tragedies are funny! Did I want to invade Iraq right away? Sure, I'm a kidder, like that Joe Corsi guy. I kill me.

Isaac said, "Boy the world sure is both complicated and simple at the same time and you Americans need to understand it better. I sure hope some American Columnist will say that, and put their words into my mouth."

I told Isaac, it was Isaac, I'm sure of it, that he was right and hopefully that would happen.

He took me to my hotel and we went in and had some Daiquiris together.

Our LEAD Story on CNN this Morning

Remember that first white guy who killed his pregnant white wife, the guy who wouldn't be famous but for the fact that he killed a white pregnant woman. Well his mistress is testifying today.

This is followed by Kobe Bryant's victim filing a civil suit. Must prominantly cover famous black men in rape trials.

Third story, Mike Wallace, gets a disorderly conduct.

Fourth story, about a circus.

Fifth story, a story about a Middle-Eastern man ARRESTED for videotaping what could very well be vacation pictures.

Swifty-Types Throughout History

Ah, the "Swift Boat Veterans for Gross Over-Negative Extrapolation", always willing to do what they can to strike a low-blow for liberty. But there have been many such groups in history, always a few years after the event, and always endorsed by Robert ("behold my TEETH") Novak. Now, let me belabor the point, with some less prominant examples throughout history (Yes, the Crucifixion and Civil War are not included).

34,000 B.C.: Og no invent fire.

Upon a hieroglyph found in Lascaux, France is a painting that anthropologists believe says it was sponsored by "Mammoth Hunting Veterans for Truth" carving "Og lie when say Mammoth fought back against hunter, Og not save Fang from mammoth foot."

Cannae, Italy, 230 B.C.: "Hannibal was afraid of elephants."

Pachyderm Driving Veterans for Truth state that it is a lie that Hannibal was a great general. "I saw him fake illness plenty of times, and there was very little arrow-fire during the Battle of Cannae. In fact, Hannibal was never in Alps during the Spring of 216."

Constantine, "what a crazy fuckerus" say former Legionnaires in 320 A.D.

Swift Marching Pagan Legionnaires for Truth assert that Constantine did not see a flaming cross at all. "It was a giant flaming donut sent by Jupiter saying 'Hey Dude, what's shakin'?". Another says, "I know that Constantine is lying about Milvian Bridge, I was there, and it didn't happen the way he says."

1075, William the Conqueror, whatf an Asshole!

Norman Cavalryman for Truth veterans angry about how William is claiming to be valiant during the Battle of Hastings. "He's a bastard", they say, one says, "that was supposed to be my wallhanging, not some trumped up story of his bravery!"

It really would have brought out the tan coloring of my peasants' teeth.

1420: Henry the V, Lying about Agincourt

The Original Band of Brothers for Truth proclaim, "But for better leadership, there would be more than we few, we happy few, left."

1924: Mustafa Kemal, was a Stupidass Blogger, say those who served under him.

Secular Muslim Fighters for Truth state, "Oh sure, we Turks are dying like flies at Gallipoli, but gloryhound At(t)aturk was too busy trying to caption pictures of Wilhelm II and his tiny arm.

Achtung! Those Frenchmen have my Moustache Wax. Send some Divisions out to get it back or I'll throw my "Male Compensation" helmet at them! Schnell, Schnell! Har, Har, Har.

Oh Yeah, He's a Real Riot

Attaturk knows something about writing bad jokes. As anybody that has read this blog knows, if there is a right-wing balloon I can pop by referring to a winger as an idiot or hypocrite I will NEVER pass up the opportunity. That includes the occasional trip down the low road.

However, there is a difference between the well-deserved jibe and sheer racist, hateful, and bigotted tripe. There is a difference between an off-color quip and a mouth-breather's diatribe.

Such was the product of one Joe Corsi, alleged author and frequent Freeper. Late last week Mr. Corsi was exposed for the knuckle-dragging baffoon that he is by Media Matters with assistance from Atrios.

Well, the national media, namely the AP eventually picked up on this and lo and behold Mr. Corsi is doing his Triumph the Insult Dog impression.

But as he prepared to launch the book, "Unfit for Command," Jerry Corsi apologized for the remarks in an interview with The Associated Press Tuesday, saying they were meant as a joke and he never intended to offend anyone.

In chat room entry last year on freerepublic.com, Corsi writes: "Islam is a peaceful religion — just as long as the women are beaten, the boys buggered and the infidels are killed."

In another entry, he says: "So this is what the last days of the Catholic Church are going to look like. Buggering boys undermines the moral base and the lawyers rip the gold off the Vatican (news - web sites) altars. We may get one more Pope, when this senile one dies, but that's probably about it."

Corsi, who described himself as a "devout Catholic," said the comments are being taken out of context. "I considered them a joke," said Corsi, who owns a financial services company and has written extensively on the anti-war movement.

In a March posting, Corsi discussed Kerry's faith, writing: "After he married TerRAHsa, didn't John Kerry begin practicing Judaism? He also has paternal grandparents that were Jewish. What religion is John Kerry?"

Kerry and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, are Catholic.

"I don't stand by any of those comments and I apologize if they offended anybody," Corsi said.

Uh-Huh, anybody buying this? Didn't think so.

Late Day Bonus Pics

Unlike some who blog, you know, the big boys, Attaturk works for a living. That's right I work hard for the money, so hard for it honey, I work hard for the money so you better treat me right.

But NOT so hard that I cannot put up a blogpost or two.

Thank God, Bush's Advisers have figured out a solid way to let the President know what State he is in.

Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld announces that the U.S. Military will replace its current use of waterboarding in favor of the Vulcan Nerve Pinch.

Um, boys remember you are the Party against the whole Gay thing?

Rather Fight, than Do it Right

Porter Goss, and his go slow approach and reflexive genuflecting to the tribe of Bush cannot be confirmed and all of that is bad for "we the people".

Nonetheless, Bush is going to push him for the post.

What a wanker. The wanker, of course, is Bush, not the man, who below tells us why Bush is a wanker.

Yesterday, Pat Roberts (R) chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee which would handle his confirmation said:

“Porter Goss? That trial balloon went up, and Sen. [John] Rockefeller [D-W.Va.] got out his BB gun and popped it out of the sky,” said Roberts in a wide-ranging interview in his Hart Building office, referring to his committee’s ranking member.

“We do not want a partisan fight right before the election,” Roberts said.

“[Rockefeller] said he was too partisan and not acceptable,” Roberts said. “I don’t think Porter is too partisan or that he is unacceptable, but that doesn’t speak for the other side. Apparently, if you have the vice chairman firmly opposed to the nominee, I don’t think that’s a very good starting point.”

Bush, while telling us all to be AFRAID and that Al Qaeda is going to act at any moment, would rather have a political fight.

It's Not Always Idiocy

Sometimes it is just mendacity.

Some folks think this is another maloprop by Bush, but rather it is part of his standard stump speech.

Bush also said high taxes on the rich are a failed strategy because "the really rich people figure out how to dodge taxes anyway."

This raises many issues both of logic, and ethics.

First, maybe somebody should just propose closing the damn loopholes. Oh, wait, Kerry has.

Second, if Rich people DODGE taxes anyway, what is the point of cutting their taxes genius?

Logical fallacy, thy name is Dubya.

God is on My Side?

Remember John Kerry's quote from Lincoln, "I humbly pray that I am on God's side". Well, none of that humble, let alone Lincoln, shite for Alan "Hi, I'm from Maryland" Keyes.

Some people have commented, or e-mailed me, asking why I am even bothering with Keyes, who has no shot at all against Obama.

I spend time because for many right-wingnuts,Keyes is a particular favorite. Which is disturbing because Keyes is so palpably an eccentric, weird-ass, clown from the Republi-theocracy brigade. The fact they'd turn to this bizarre man,who is from half a continent away from Illinois says something disturbing about the GOP, one that deserves exposure and mockery.

It also helps, that as someone who blogs principally through sarcasm, Keyes is a limitless repository of jackassary.

For example, yesterday:

"I will promise you a battle like this nation has never seen ... The battle is for us, but I have confidence because the victory is for God."

If God plays a role in the victory Alan, then history suggests God is not exactly rootin' for you.

In 1988, God chose Paul Sarbanes over you, and not by a little bit. He beat you by more than 20 points and you ran well behind the Bush/Quayle ticket.

Now, some might think that this was a sign from God that he's not at your back.

But, NOOOOO!

You ran again, thinking that God was too busy insuring the defeat of that lover of Slavery Michael Dukakis.

And in 1992, you were up against Barbara Mikulski; a woman who, not very well, conceals the fact she hangs out in the same wardrobe as Matt Drudge. Surely, God would allow you to defeat this Godless Gay?

Nope, God decided to have you ass-whupped even worse this time. You lost by more than 40 points.

Alan, you lost by 40 points to a short, dumpy, charismaless, lesbian in a State even Spiro Agnew managed to win in.

Criminy crap, if God is telling you anything it is, "You Suck at this"! Why aren't you listening?

THIS is in the Wall Street Journal? (Subscription)

Was it right next to the editorial about how eliminating the estate tax will cure cancer?

Jim Rassman, special forces guy who's life was saved by John Kerry lays the smack down on "The Swift Boat Veterans for Slander".

I came to know Lt. John Kerry during the spring of 1969. He and his swift boat crew assisted in inserting our Special Forces team and our Chinese Nung soldiers into operational sites in the Cau Mau Peninsula of South Vietnam. I worked with him on many operations and saw firsthand his leadership, courage and decision-making ability under fire.

On March 13, 1969, John Kerry's courage and leadership saved my life.

While returning from a SEA LORDS operation along the Bay Hap River, a mine detonated under another swift boat. Machine-gun fire erupted from both banks of the river, and a second explosion followed moments later. The second blast blew me off John's swift boat, PCF-94, throwing me into the river. Fearing that the other boats would run me over, I swam to the bottom of the river and stayed there as long as I could hold my breath.

When I surfaced, all the swift boats had left, and I was alone taking fire from both banks. To avoid the incoming fire, I repeatedly swam under water as long as I could hold my breath, attempting to make it to the north bank of the river. I thought I would die right there. The odds were against me avoiding the incoming fire and, even if I made it out of the river, I thought I'd be captured and executed. Kerry must have seen me in the water and directed his driver, Del Sandusky, to turn the boat around. Kerry's boat ran up to me in the water, bow on, and I was able to climb up a cargo net to the lip of the deck. But, because I was nearly upside down, I couldn't make it over the edge of the deck. This left me hanging out in the open, a perfect target. John, already wounded by the explosion that threw me off his boat, came out onto the bow, exposing himself to the fire directed at us from the jungle, and pulled me aboard...

Nobody asked me to join John's campaign. Why would they? I am a Republican, and for more than 30 years I have largely voted for Republicans. I volunteered for his campaign because I have seen John Kerry in the worst of conditions. I know his character. I've witnessed his bravery and leadership under fire. And I truly know he will be a great commander in chief.

Now, 35 years after the fact, some Republican-financed Swift Boat Veterans for Bush are suddenly lying about John Kerry's service in Vietnam; they are calling him a traitor because he spoke out against the Nixon administration's failed policies in Vietnam. Some of these Republican-sponsored veterans are the same ones who spoke out against John at the behest of the Nixon administration in 1971. But this time their attacks are more vicious, their lies cut deep and are directed not just at John Kerry, but at me and each of his crewmates as well. This hate-filled ad asserts that I was not under fire; it questions my words and Navy records. This smear campaign has been launched by people without decency, people who don't understand the bond of those who serve in combat.

As John McCain noted, the television ad aired by these veterans is "dishonest and dishonorable." Sen. McCain called on President Bush to condemn the Swift Boat Veterans for Bush ad. Regrettably, the president has ignored Sen. McCain's advice.

Does this strategy of attacking combat Vietnam veterans sound familiar? In 2000, a similar Republican smear campaign was launched against Sen. McCain. In fact, the very same communications group, Spaeth Communications, that placed ads against John McCain in 2000 is involved in these vicious attacks against John Kerry. Texas Republican donors with close ties to George W. Bush and Karl Rove crafted this "dishonest and dishonorable" ad. Their new charges are false; their stories are fabricated, made up by people who did not serve with Kerry in Vietnam. They insult and defame all of us who served in Vietnam.
But when the noise and fog of their distortions and lies have cleared, a man who volunteered to serve his country, a man who showed up for duty when his country called, a man to whom the United States Navy awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts, will stand tall and proud. Ultimately, the American people will judge these Swift Boat Veterans for Bush and their accusations. Americans are tired of smear campaigns against those who volunteered to wear the uniform. Swift Boat Veterans for Bush should hang their heads in shame.

Mr. Rassmann, a retired lieutenant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, served with the U.S. Army 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam 1968-69.

Not a Change for the Better

Flipping around the channels and what do I see at this moment but C-SPAN playing Gerald Ford's First Press Conference, August 24, 1974.

Ford, who was never known as a genius, is handling each and every question given to him by the press corps (which includes a thin, stupid looking Mort Kondrake) with great dexterity and detail.

Our current leader rolls his eyes, looks up at nothing, rolls his shoulders and stammers when asked to name a single error he has ever made.

Sad isn't it?

Meanwhile, in Jackass Land

Comes this endorsement of Alan Keyes from failed Republican Primary Candidate Jim Oberweis who referred to Keyes versus Obama as,
"a debate between good on the right and evil on the left."

Sweet.

Just remember this about George W. Bush and Vietnam when they try to attack Kerry

Telling as to the man's desire to put his body where his convictions are -- this is the type of man the Swifties and Rethugs are defending by attacking Kerry.

The Department of Homeland Security Redundancy

Allegedly THIS is breaking news:

The United States has received information about additional possible terror targets in the country, including the U.S. Capitol in Washington, a counterterror official said on Sunday.

Homeland security adviser Frances Townsend said on CBS' "Face the Nation" the targets were in addition to the five cited last week when the terror threat alert was raised to the second-highest level for financial buildings in Washington, New York and Newark, New Jersey.

Asked if there had been a threat against Washington or lawmakers, Townsend said, "Yes, in the past and as part of this continuing threat stream, and so we shared that with them."

Wow, the terrorists have a desire to strike at the Capitol?

NOOOOOOOOOOO, you're fucking joking?

This is coming from the suddenly ubiquitous Frances "F" Townsend, instead of Tom Ridge.

It appears that quietly;

Bush Waves Goodbye to Another State

New Mexico is supposed to be a battleground state, which, like say, Iowa is given clout well beyond its electoral votes because of just how close the election is going to be.

In 2000, New Mexico went Gore by 366 votes. If Bush could win it, he would make Kerry's job that much more difficult.

But apparently, Bush has given up on that idea.

Overriding the opposition of the U.S. Forest Service and New Mexico state officials, a White House energy task force has interceded on behalf of Houston-based El Paso Corp. in its two-year effort to explore for natural gas in a remote part of a national forest next door to America's largest Boy Scout camp.

Forest Service officials discouraged efforts to drill in the Valle Vidal at least three times since the agency acquired the land in 1982, citing concerns about water pollution, wildlife and recreation if a large-scale energy project were approved...

Home to 200 species of birds and 60 types of mammals, including one of the state's largest elk herds, the "Valley of Life," as it was named by Latino pioneers, has been a proving ground for generations of young men and women in a wilderness training program run by the Boy Scouts of America.

Since 1938, the Boy Scouts have operated a national training center on the 200-square-mile Philmont Ranch southeast of the Valle Vidal. Each year some 25,000 young people converge on the ranch for a host of outdoor activities.

But when the Forest Service, in consultation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, rejected El Paso Corp.'s request in 2002, the company appealed to the administration.

Believe it or not, there are a number of conservatives and independents who like to hunt, fish, and camp in their home state of New Mexico.

In addition to buying his Sweat

The most interesting (and far less repellant thing) about Alan Keyes is whether he can do better in Illinois than he did in Maryland, where he was TROUNCED by that non-dynamic duo of Babs Mikulski and Paul Sarbanes. I'm betting a profound NO.

1988 Senate Results, Maryland:

Paul Sarbanes (D): 62% (999,166 votes)
Alan Keyes (R) : 38% (617,537 votes)

Comparitive Presidential vote in 1988 for Maryland:

Mike Dukakis (D) : 48% (826,304 votes)
G.H.W. Bush (R) : 51% (876,167 votes)

Number of votes Keyes runs behind the GOP Candidate: 258,630

1992 Senate Results, Maryland:

Babs Mikulski (D): 71% (1,307,610 votes)
Alan Keyes (R: 29% (533,668 votes)

Comparitive Presidential vote in 1992 for Maryland:

G.H.W. Bush (R) : 36% (707,094 votes)
Bill Clinton(D) : 50% (988,571 votes)
H. Ross Perot(I): 14% (281,414 votes)

Number of votes Keyes runs behind the GOP Candidate: 173,426

So as you can see Alan Keyes is a proven vote REPELLER. That is how sad and pathetic the Illinois GOP is. I'm betting the Keyes will run nearly 1,000,000 votes behind Bush who is himself going to be crushed in Illinois by Kerry.

This is the organization that gave de facto birth to the Republican Party and this is how badly they do.

Too Political to Remain in Charge

How many times are we going to see the Bush Administration play politics with National Security before an overwhelming majority of Americans see them as too damn dangerous and irresponsible to remain in charge.

It is not just invading Iraq on faulty and deficient circumstances (and that is being diplomatic of course). The litany of their use of politics over national security is long and shameful. But the latest series is disgusting.

Not only did they divulge the identity of a CIA Operative, Valerie Plame, for purposes of political revenge, but now, with a whiff of criticism that the "terror alert" was politically motivated, they say, "You want politics over security? Try this on for size liberals".

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- The effort by U.S. officials to justify raising the terror alert level last week may have shut down an important source of information that has already led to a series of al Qaeda arrests, Pakistani intelligence sources have said.

Until U.S. officials leaked the arrest of Muhammad Naeem Noor Khan to reporters, Pakistan had been using him in a sting operation to track down al Qaeda operatives around the world, the sources said.

In background briefings with journalists last week, unnamed U.S. government officials said it was the capture of Khan that provided the information that led Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge to announce a higher terror alert level.

Khan is a computer expert who officials said helped Osama bin Laden communicate with his terror network.

Investigators found detailed surveillance information on certain targets in the United States, apparently conducted by al Qaeda operatives, on Khan's computer disks.

The unnamed U.S. officials leaked Khan's name along with confirmation that most of the surveillance data was three or four years old, arguing that its age was irrelevant because al Qaeda planned attacks so far in advance.

Law enforcement sources said some of the intelligence gleaned from the arrests of Khan and others gave phone numbers and e-mail addresses that the FBI and other agencies were using to try to track down any al Qaeda operatives in the United States.

Then on Friday, after Khan's name was revealed, government sources told CNN that counterterrorism officials had seen a drop in intercepted communications among suspected terrorists.

Officials used Sunday's talk shows to defend last week's heightened alerts, amid widespread claims the White House disclosed Khan's arrest to justify raising its terror alert level. (Full story)

But some observers have said that Islamabad should not have been compromised by political considerations in Washington.

One senator told CNN that U.S. officials should have kept Khan's role quiet.

"You always want to know the evidence," said Senator George Allen.

"In this situation, in my view, they should have kept their mouth shut and just said, 'We have information, trust us.' "

Senator Charles Schumer said he was "troubled" by the decision to identify Khan.

He said the public learned little from reports of Khan's role, "and it seems to me they shouldn't have put this name out."

"The Pakistani interior minister, Faisal Hayat, as well as the British home secretary, David Blunkett, have expressed displeasure in fairly severe terms that Khan's name was released, because they were trying to track down other contacts of his," Schumer told CNN.

I would think this would keep the Right-Wingers quiet about not trusting Democrats with National Security, but of course it will not. Remember this, amongst other things, when they try to sell the country on this argument later this month.

Bring it on bangs a gong

Well folks it appears that the Bush people have no clue how to wage war on terrorism or for that matter anything else. If you enter the keywords "terror" into Google, you'll get over 6.5 million hits. Enter the word "terrorism" and you'll get almost 5.5 million and "terror" will return almost 5 million. "Terrorist" will get you 4.3 million and the "war on terror" returns a little over a 500,000.

I suppose if the Bush people were waging a public relations war they would follow a Rovian master plan of some of the following: use inappropriate force, torture prisoners or allow them to be tortured for no good reason, "accidentally" blow up some mosques, hurl lies about Bush's opponent, act with callous disregard of the people or Iraq, purposefully "out" undercover agents... and still believe that they are doing the right thing.

And while we are on the subject of strange behavior, what is Alan Keys doing? Can he really hope to win, naw. Then is he being a good soldier for the party in the hopes of accumulating some needed social capital with the power boys?

Is there a funny substance affecting Republicans minds on the Rove talking points memos or something?

Oh, those Wacky Neo-Cons

Just breaking, arrest warrants not only for long-time con-man Ahmed Chalabi, but also for his nephew, the person who was supposed to oversee the special tribunal overseeing the trial of Saddam, Salem Chalabi.

Remember, these were the two guys the Bushies originally wanted running Iraq.

More "W"incompetence in action.

NOTE: Curiously, both men were indicted while apparently out of the country.

What does that mean?

OH!, OH!

Needlenose, one of the best of those of us who blog on the level below the big boys (Swopa, Green Boy et al deserve many hits IMO) provides us with this new information regarding Ayatolla Sistani, and contrary to some other reports that said it was tactical, it may be legit.

This certainly isn't good.

From Agence France-Presse:

Shiite Islam's most revered cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, was admitted to a London hospital, according to a statement from the cleric's Najaf office.

"Upon his arrival in London, Sayed Sistani met with a medical team that advised him to enter a specialist hospital to undergo the necessary tests or procedures," said the statement without providing further details.

Of course, if it wasn't a publicity stunt, as Swopa asks, why the picture?

Curious.

Don't Forget to Be AFRAID...VERY AFRAID...WE MEAN IT.

Economy, bad; Iraq, Bad; International Prestige, Bad; Plame Investigation, Bad; Afghanistan, Not Good; Saying "We are Safer", Bad; Kerry's big crowds, Bad; Halliberton Investigations, Bad.

Better go to the Machiavelli Card:

(1) "Therefore a wise prince ought to adopt such a course that his citizens will always in every sort and kind of circumstance have need of the state and of him, and then he will always find them faithful. "
--Chapter 9

(2) Since love and fear can hardly exist together, if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved.
--Chapter 17, Karl's Favorite

Good thing we can feed the corporate press with information like how Al Qaeda is going to strike us before election day to keep those fears up.

Ah, Back to the Good Ol' Days...

From Reuters:

Since he took over from U.S.-led occupiers on June 28, Allawi has threatened tough action against insurgents carrying out a wave of car bombings, assassinations and kidnappings.

Backing those threats up, the interim government reinstated the death penalty Sunday for crimes including murder, kidnapping and drug offences, officials told a news conference.

Capital punishment was suspended after U.S.-led forces toppled Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) in April last year.

Of course, rumor has it that Allawi is a big fan of Capital Punishment, at least until his chamber's empty.

Well there is a balanced Lineup!

Hey, Press the Meat has quite a balanced lineup today. Too bad Attaturk has chosen exploratory self-surgery over watching it.

Timmah's Schedule is:

MEET THE PRESS (NBC): National security adviser Condoleezza Rice, House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and New York Times columnists Maureen Dowd and William Safire.

Wow, 3 Republicans and 1 Self-Absorbed Word-Whore (for Republicans that would be redundant).

At least Little Russ can swap book-writin' stories with Denny, and maybe later the two of them can go out and clear out a brunch buffet.

Mis-steps and Mis-pronouncements

As has been evident for some time now, Chimpy is a very disturbed preznit, a man hopped up on privilege and testosterone. While no one here at the Rising Hegemon have training and experience in the psychological side of the world, beyond late night meanderings. I have to comment on the Chimperor's latest pronouncement.

Ok, most of us have now heard the comments on how "our enemies never stop thinking about how to harm us, and we have too". Ok, listen carefully, he then talks about defending ourselves, but given his lack of clarity and mispronouncing big words, that is 4 letters or more, sound to me like he is offending ourselves when he meant defendign ourselves. UhhhhMmmmmm....

Now most of us agree that the way to understand Chimpy must begin with money and religion.....And those like us blogsters see that the personal, the wealth, and the psychological, as one area that is both autonomous, yet colludes in the creation of people like Chimpy.

But w's slip of the tongue, and vee all know dat zee unconscious is revealed in slips, dreams and forgetting, reveals a deep, sado-masochistic streak evident to most (see Bush on the Couch, available at a bookseller near your house). But this extreme form, the valorization of death, was seen almost as necrophilia, the love of death. Psychologist Erich Fromm argues that it is rooted in failure to fulfill the self, blockages in self realization... I wonder if Chimpy would know anything about those kinds of frustrations? (poor student, poor athlete, poor soldier or at least poor weekend solder, failure in Business -- do I need to go on?)

Ok, it is not my interest to amateur psycho-analyze W, but rather to note how he, as a great example of a certain streak of American society, really deplores actual life (love, freedom, sexuality to name a few), and sees death as transition to a better life, one with God via rapture or apocalypse. One day soon, all the true believers believe that they will suddenly be swept to heaven, butt naked for the first part of the trip. Don't laugh, the end days books like the Left Behind series sell in the millions.

Thus we have much to fear with such an attitude in our president (legitimate or not), like massive deficits don't matter, no one decent will be around to pay for them, killing Iraqis serves God, etc etc.

But as I have said in previous missives, it looks like, to paraphrase Kerry, not 4 more years but 3 more months. Ah, and then a kinder, gentler president will take over who has to contend with millions who think like Chimpy and now have an axe to grind -- just like when Clinton won the presidency. But think about the situation that Kerry inherents: A world where multinational forces serve the interests of corporations like Haliburton rather than the people. The Patriot act is supposed to expire but I would not hold my breath on that one going bye bye. Schools get a bit more money, but wealthy areas will continue to remain flush with money and resources while poor school districts continue to spiral downward. And more: inequality will grow, the middle east will continue to flare, all the while Iran and North Korea will eventually build nukes.

Ah, what a wonderful world where we think of new ways to harm.

Are we using Poison Gas in Iraq?

Bob Nichols has an amazing report about the possibility that the US Military has used weaponized uranium oxide gas. While these reports will have to be verified, if they accurate this raises the stakes considerably and leads to increasing call for a serious war crimes investigation. What does this mean for a country already losing its way?

Legacy Bush against Legacies

Bush -- the legacy from Yale -- is apparently against legacies. Of course, there is this ubiquitous statement among critics of affirmative action such as Mr. Preznit that entrance into college should be based on merit. But I have to ask, how are we going to define merit? What does merit mean to a kid from a school that does not even have indoor plumbing? What is that kid supposed to think about how little they are valued?

Where is this travesty occuring? Some far flung Asian country? The Middle east? Iraq? Try Ohio. That's right the so-called "heart of it all" state (ignore the lame slogan) has some school districts that are so poor that they lack basic services and indoor plumbing. I wonder if any of those kids have to worry about the problem of legacies?

Do as I say not as I try to do.

Not only can she Drink like a Fish

She can catch them too. As CNN, the network which ignores things like your basic Operative outings, in favor of this hard hitting coverage:

One of President Bush's twin daughters reeled in a 38-inch (96.5-centimeter) striped bass, the president proudly announced.

Here is the fish:

"Jenna caught it. Jenna caught the fish!" Bush shouted to journalists from his father's boat. Photographers said the monster was thrown back into the Atlantic.

Apparently, when fishing the Bush's treat fish the same way they treat Maqtada Al-Sadr.

But while were on it Mr. President, perhaps you'll remember to catch the one that got away:

Or are you saving that for October?

Unfit to Comment

Lt. Commander Elliott is quite a flip-flopper.

According to the "Closeted Fedora" he has submitted another affidavit retracting his statement retracting his other affidavit. The Boston Globe which earlier reported the first retraction stands by its story as being a direct quote.

Hey, speaking of quotes, let's see what Mr. Elliot has said about Kerry before:

In this link, about 2/3 through the video you can see Elliot in 1996 praising Kerry on that wacking thing called videotape...standing right next to the guy.

And of course, there are the statements he made about Kerry at that 1996 conference in full, from Kerry's website:

"The fact that he chased an armed enemy down is not something not to be looked down upon but it was an act of courage. And the whole outfit served with honor..."[T]here was no question that it was above and beyond anything that we had seen down there in that case at that time frame...It just so happened that this one was so outstanding that the Silver Star was eventually awarded."

And here is what he said in 1969 when evaluating Kerry as a Swift Boat Commander:

"In a combat environment often requiring independent, decisive action, LTJG Kerry was unsurpassed. He constantly reviewed tactics and lessons learned in river operations and applied his experience at every opportunity. On one occasion, while in tactical command of a three boat operation his units were taken under fire from ambush. LTJG Kerry rapidly assessed the situation and ordered his units to turn directly into the ambush. This decision resulted in routing the attackers with several KIA. LTJG Kerry emerges as the acknowledged leader in his peer group. His bearing and appearance are above reproach. He has of his own volition learned the Vietnamese language and is instrumental in the successful Vietnamese training program. During the period of this report LTJG Kerry has been awarded the Silver Star medal, the Bronze Star medal, the Purple Heart medal (2nd and 3rd awards)."[U.S. Navy, Officer Fitness Report signed by George Elliott; 18, Dec 1969]

And then here is what he said about the Silver Star award:

The [Silver Star] ceremony [for John Kerry] was meant to be a morale booster,' Commander George Elliot recalled. 'We were trying to pay tribute to Kerry and the others for going above and beyond the call of duty. The Silver Star is always a big deal." [Tour of Duty, 2004, Brinkley; p. 294]

Do we even have a Broadcast News Media?

That is the question the three major cable news networks should be asking themselves.

I have given sort of veiled, whistling past the graveyard jokes, about how while Iraq seems to be in confligration, the major broadcasts networks and a good share of the print ones too, seem to be reporting on an "Alice in Wonderland" Iraq that comprises the so-called Green Zone of Baghdad.

The matter is stark and clear this morning. Saturday morning is a wasteland of television in the Attaturk household as yours truly sits in his home office and works with CNN on in the background. Like NPR at this very moment, the lead story on CNN is the granting of "quasi-pardons" to insurgents from Iyad "Six Shooter" Allawi. The CNN report is pretty much given without any context. While NPR goes on to report fierce fighting throughout numerous spots in Iraq, the CNN report barely touches upon this, while then stating that Allawi has kicked Al Jazeera out of Baghdad for thirty days.

No word on what our Iraqi Quisling did next, though it would be appropriate perhaps if he would go down to Basra and try to command the tide to recede (of course, that would be way too damn dangerous for the alleged sovereign of Iraq).

And now for my third metaphor use.

Why won't the broadcast newsmedia report on this Potempkin Political Village?

Was Wolfowitz right, albeit in the opposite direction? I think for a number of them that may be. They only report what they know, and what they know is what occurs in the confines of the Green Zone. They and the inhabitants of it are all "Stockholm Syndromers" now.

A broadcast reporter needs more than just himself to make a report, he needs his crew and its equipment. A little heavier a load, and harder to hide, than a print reporter. As a result, the broadcast media doesn't actually report accurately in Iraq, not nearly as well as the print media. But that doesn't excuse not supplementing their hide-bound reports with more substantive ones that do escape their barricaded safespot.

For example, this one from Knight Ridder:

After the past two days of fighting in southern and central Iraq, the difference between firebrand cleric Muqtada al Sadr and Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi couldn't be any more clear: Al Sadr has an army, and Allawi does not.

In Iraq, security is politics. When Allawi took office, the self-styled strongman lost little time before declaring that his government wouldn't tolerate the insurgency that's swept the country.

But as in previous battles, when al Sadr's Mahdi Army militia began to overrun Najaf and several neighborhoods from Baghdad to Basra, the Iraqi police force and national guard fought for a little while, then ran.

And as in previous battles, Iraq's Achilles' heel was revealed: To defend their country, Allawi and the interim government must go to the American military, an institution that's widely reviled by many Iraqis as an occupational force run amok.

And the responsibility for this, lies less in the general personality of Iraqis, than in the manner in which the occupation has been horribly planned and outrageously botched -- blame for which falls squarely upon the shoulders of our National Embarrasment:

Many in Iraq take al Sadr's popularity as a sign of the U.S. failure to provide an alternative. The militia, it seems, may not be as much a coordinated fighting force as an expression of Iraqi rage at the American presence.

"The Iraqis are frustrated by the heat, the lack of water and the lack of electricity," said Sadoun al Dulame, the head of an independent research center in Baghdad. "All that we have gotten is talk and promises, but nothing has actually been done."

In Baghdad's Sadr City neighborhood, there are long gas lines, a near-epidemic of typhoid and hepatitis due to poor-quality water, and an electrical grid that provides only six hours of power daily for many residents.

Adel Hamid, a vegetable merchant in Sadr City, which was named for al Sadr's late father, said that over the course of about 15 months of suffering through a lack of basic services, he'd come to see the Americans as the enemy.

"The fight will continue and (Allah willing) we will be victorious," Hamid said. "I will sacrifice my three boys for the Sadr movement; they are in the Mahdi Army now to protect the city."

SWOPA at Needlenose is on top of this, and like me, noticed something strange about Sistani's departure from Najaf suddenly yesterday for alleged heart problems (all while trampsing around in Lebanon on his feet and looking fit). This did not go unnoticed by someone particularly qualified to discuss it, Professor Suave and Debonair:

One problem with an all-out attack on the Mahdi Army was that it might endanger the life of, or meet opposition from, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani. He was therefore spirited out of Najaf on the pretext that he had heart problems. But Al-Zaman reports today that Sistani stopped off in Beirut on his way to London, where he met with moderate Shiite leader Nabih Berri of the AMAL party, who serves as Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament. Sistani then went on to London, but is not in hospital and won't be for at least a week. This story just does not square with him being so ill that he had to be airlifted to London for emergency heart treatment. It would not have been easy for al-Zurufi and the Americans to convince Sistani to leave, but they could have simply shared with him their plans to have an all-out war in Najaf, and told him they could not protect him. That would have left him no choice but to leave. If you think about it, he could not possibly have been gotten out of Najaf to Beirut and London without US military assistance, though he flew a private plane from Baghdad airport.

Al-Hayat reports that Sistani's reason for leaving at this juncture was to remove himself from the scene of the fighting and to lift the mantle of his authority from the Sadrist movement. It was alleged that his distance from Muqtada, always substantial, had widened further in recent weeks. Al-Hayat suspects that if Sistani has ceased trying to protect Muqtada, it could mean that a decision has been made to put an end to him.

So this is an effort at an end game with Al Sadr? Too bad the Mahdi army is growing so quickly throughout the country then. Al Sadr alive or Al Sadr dead, he's no great battle tactician, but is creating a martyr a good idea necessarily?

Things are not getting better, and Americans (if they are so inclined [Ed: good luck with that] are going to have to dig deeper than CNN, Fox, and MSNBC to get the facts on the ground over there.

Ah, another day in Pictures -- UNITY Edition

Our one and only, our feckless Chimperor went two straight days without making an understandable sentence, I bet he even fucked up, "Laura pass the pretzels". Poor Chimpy the world is collapsing around him. Let's enjoy some of the visual highlights.

Get on with the question you goddamn ethnic!

Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do.

Pay NO ATTENTION to the man behind the curtain!

Hey look, White People.

I do believe they are starting to run out of backdrop statements.

The Closest Dubya will ever get to a Swiftboat.

That's right, I've got no pulse...

Mmmmm, babies is tasty.

Uncle Sam wants you, to become a fashion plate. Shortly after this photo was taken these soldiers were given sandals and lawn mowers and were distributed throughout the American suburbs.

"W"incompetence in "W"intelligence: Pakistani Valerie Plame

Jeebus fooking Chist, can these folks manage to ever do things right?

U.S. officials providing justification for anti-terrorism alerts revealed details about a Pakistani secret agent, and confirmed his name while he was working under cover in a sting operation, Pakistani sources said on Friday.
A Pakistani intelligence source told Reuters Mohammad Naeem Noor Khan, who was arrested in Lahore secretly last month, had been actively cooperating with intelligence agents to help catch al Qaeda operatives when his name appeared in U.S. newspapers.

"After his capture he admitted being an al Qaeda member and agreed to send e-mails to his contacts," a Pakistani intelligence source told Reuters. "He sent encoded e-mails and received encoded replies. He's a great hacker and even the U.S. agents said he was a computer whiz."

"He was cooperating with interrogators on Sunday and Monday and sent e-mails on both days," the source said.

The New York Times published a story on Monday saying U.S. officials had disclosed that a man arrested secretly in Pakistan was the source of the bulk of information leading to the security alerts.

OK, you've got this undercover Pakistani guy you've turned and he's cooperating and using his skills to help you find terrorists.

But then you get criticized, so you OUT THE GUY to try to cover your ass from criticism.

I'm sure we'll be turning a lot of Al Qaeda operatives into double agents now huh?

It's fucking Pakistani Valerie Plame.

What has Scooter been up to?

It must be Casual Friday for all the Gang...

At where Lobotomy Street and Vivisection Avenue meet.

I guess silly old me thinks that IF the report showed 200,000 jobs they'd manage to find a way to crow about it. But if the report is disappointing and the White House is stammering, you think they might say something like, well I don't know, something...

But nooooooooo!

Not a thing.

Hey, when the reports are good on the surface, I at least try to make a token effort to look into the matter [Ed: Sure by going to Brad DeLong's site you simp].

And they get paid!

White House is having Trouble with Talking Points this Morning

The intersection of Insanity Street & Cretin Avenue has yet to comment on the suck-ass payroll jobs report.

Also no mention of what was apparently a stupifyingly bad press conference by our Chimperor. Anybody see it?

An Honest Suggested Bush Campaign Slogan

George W. Bush's Foreign Policy:

IT'S TO DIE FOR!

In Case you were wondering Part 2

Fedora Boy's headline on the crappy job figures...no comment, at top of page is this:

32,000 Jobs Added in July; Rate Drops...

Nice try.

To his, partial credit, he did note the retraction of Mr. Elliot of the not-so-Swifties. His original flashing light special story hasn't changed though.

Still a cretin.

I HOPE, Hope is on the Way

Disastrous Job figures for our Chimperor's Administration. But that is the ONLY good news.

From CNN/Money:

The Labor Department report showed only 32,000 new net jobs added to payrolls during the month, down from a revised 78,000 jobs that were added in June. The unemployment rate fell to 5.5 percent, an improvement from the 5.6 percent reading in June.

Economists surveyed by Briefing.com forecast a 243,000 gain in jobs, and the unemployment rate staying unchanged at 5.6 percent, while economists surveyed by Reuters had a median jobs growth forecast of 228,000, with a range of estimates between 200,000 and 300,000.

They'll try at the White House, but there is NO WAY they can make it good. This is bad for the country, but even worse for Bush and great talking points for Kerry/Edwards (the ONLY good thing to come out of it).

Wow, that is BAD.

I will not bow to this War Hero from the Northeast, this Kerry, last of a ragged house long bereft of Lordship

Oh yes, such a geek, such a geek.

Attaturk was intending on working on a little skit called "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth - Throughout History" (hey, if you cannot repeat the same structured comic piece over and over and over again, what good is it?). Unfortunately, you never know when writer's block is going to hit you and make your "good idea" suck with the material you have. You know, like a typical Saturday Night Live sketch. So, I'll probably finish that soon (maybe not, some folks are throwing stuff out at Atrios' comments already; including ideas I had, but I don't want to be accused of stealing...shit!), but until then...

In any case, there was something interesting in the current edition of the Atlantic that tells you just how much scumbaggery the Bushies are ready to engage in and how ready they were to go on the attack about "Military Service" when it was going to clearly benefit them.

Now, of course, they want the meme to be "oh, it doesn't matter, it was so long ago". That is because their guy used his connections for a cushy gig protecting the gulf coast from "charlie" while the other guy was getting his ass shot at "in the shit".

But what if a non-serving liberal had been nominated, like Howard Dean? What was the "Chickenhawk" line going to be then? Well the Atlantic has the answer...unfortunately the article is one you have to pay for, so I'll just copy the applicable section from the always entertaining SullyWatch.

Brabender then played “Ski Patrol,” which was created with the Bush campaign in mind but never had a chance to air. It begins with a shot of blue sky and pristine alps. “Howard Dean was granted a deferment from the military after showing up at a recruitment office with an x-ray indicating he had a bad back,” the voice-of-God narrator says. Suddenly a skier shoots off a snowy precipice and slaloms expertly down the mountain. “That very same year, Dean went on to ski eighty times — eighty — helping him to become an expert skier and the perfect commander in chief ... if we ever go to war against Switzerland.”

SullyWatch is right that the GOP has been waiving the service "bloody shirt" for years (hell after Lincoln they did it for not one, but three generations until WWI when they became the pacifist party until Wendell Wilkie came along -- ah, the dynamics of politics). They had NO compunction against doing so in 1992 or 1996, and went out of their way to make fun of veteran (but non-war period veteran) Michael Dukakis in 1988. In 2000, Gore could have pushed more on the issue, but chose not to -- one of many errors made with the benefit of hindsight. They were all ready to waive it around again.

So for years, the Democrats have ignored the issue while the GOP beat the horse to death. For Republicans to get a bit of the taste of their own medicine is more than deserved.

But look to the depths they will go. To my recollection this is the FIRST time I recall a decorated veteran being questioned and mocked for his heroism, especially by a guy who cannot even demonstrate, and in fact may soon have it demonstrated, that he did not perform even the MINIMUM required of his non-lethal service.

On the face of it, it seems patently stupid to encourage such a game -- but these guys do not know any other way to play the game and the press is by and large so lazy that they may be able to get away with it.

In Case you Were Wondering

Whether Closted Fedora Boy had ANY credibility, let us see whether he stops hyperventilating about the Swift Boat Veterans for Slander long enough to notice something.

Drudgey-Poo notes this in his fallatin' of the "not so Swift(s)":

"Commander Geoge Elliott, who wrote up the initial draft of Kerry's Silver Star citation, confirms that neither he, nor anyone else in the Silver Star process that he knows, realized before 1996 that Kerry was facing a single, wounded young Viet Cong fleeing in a loincloth. While Commander Elliott and many other Swiftees believe that Kerry committed no crime in killing the fleeing, wounded enemy (with a loaded or empty launcher), others feel differently. Commander Elliott indicates that a Silver Star recommendation would not have been made by him had he been aware of the actual facts.

Hey, Lt. Commander Elliott, what about that?

Yesterday, reached at his home, Elliott said he regretted signing the affidavit and said he still thinks Kerry deserved the Silver Star.

''I still don't think he shot the guy in the back," Elliott said. ''It was a terrible mistake probably for me to sign the affidavit with those words. I'm the one in trouble here."

Elliott said he was no under personal or political pressure to sign the statement, but he did feel ''time pressure" from those involved in the book. ''That's no excuse," Elliott said. ''I knew it was wrong . . . In a hurry I signed it and faxed it back. That was a mistake."

This, of course, is par for the course for the not so swifties.

Alan Keyes.....The GOP in Illinois is SO SAD...

They cannot even come up with their own home-grown lunatics?

Alan Keyes ran for Senate twice before in Maryland in 1988 and again in 1992, trounced by those pillars of charisma Paul Sarbanes and Babs Mikulski. He has lived in Maryland for many, many years.

However, the Illinois GOP's consistent "Ryan" problems and reticent Fitzgeralds has apparently left it without candidates. The last I heard Illinois is a pretty big state all things considered and they had to go to Maryland to get a guy who has never even come close to winning anything.

I've seen some, well let's be kind, "reality-challenged" Republicans say this is a great move and using the classic buzzward "eloquent" to describe Keyes. That's laughable, a blowhard is a blowhard. Take Al Sharpton, or if you'd rather a Pat Buchanon, they can be a great convention speaker and give a stemwinder. But they are first class bloviators, they are not eloquent, they are loud. That can be good on occasion, but over long periods of time it is grating. And Keyes is this type of with that added touch of "being touched" by inanity and insanity.

Having "gravitas" is what you want as a politician. It means being impressive in both loud and quiet ways. Obama has that, like Clinton had it -- and yes, like Reagan had it (as stupifying as that seemed to some of us at the time -- and vice versa for conservatives). Politicians who "harangue" and "demogogues" generally only succeed in limited fashion, like a congressional district, but rarely in a larger area, like an Illinois. Obama is a lock in Illinois, and with Keyes in the race, I guess we will find what the rock-bottom level the GOP can get in an election.

I think uber Josh says it best:

Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the 'wingers who seem to have taken over the Illinois GOP think this is going to happen. But this is the really the stupidest idea in the world.

Keyes is something else to watch on the hustings or in a debate. But calling him a master debater is rather like saying Dolly Parton has a dynamite bod or Lou Ferrigno is toned -- or, perhaps mostly aptly, that the Tasmanian Devil from the Bugs Bunny cartoons is quick on his feet. In other words, impressive in his own way, but also a bit cartoonish and rather less than subtle.

If and when these two guys debate what we're going to hear are rants from Keyes -- both spellbinding and inane -- about how tort reform is necessary to bring America back into compliance with natural law, how drug reimportation is incompatible with the principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence and how gun control has been outlawed by God.

Obama is getting 65 to 75 percent of the vote. Alan Keyes gets to bloviate, which is what he really cares about.

Alan Keyes is a "dynamic and compelling" candidate the way that Carrot Top is a "dynamic and compelling" stand up comedian. There will always be a large enough slice of the population for him to make a living, but the overwhelming majority of people are going to think, WTF until they both get to perpetuate their careers on being "the joke".

Progressive Radio Sells

Despite struggles with funding early on, in the area where it counts, getting listeners to sell commercials, Progressive Radio is working.

We know that the numbers on New Yorks WLIB were impressive, well in Portland, Air America is a huge hit.

Attention, Rush Limbaugh and everyone else who thought that liberal talk radio couldn’t work: Portland is proving otherwise. At least if you believe the folks who measure listenership.

The spring Arbitron ratings show that KPOJ (620 AM), which carries the upstart Air America Network with Al Franken, Randi Rhodes, et al., has made huge strides since its March 30 launch.

In the important 25-54 age category, KPOJ ranks third in the Portland market with a 4.9 share (which means a 4.9 percent share of the listening audience). It’s ahead of all other AM stations and finished behind top-ranked country-music KUPL (98.7 FM) and No. 2-ranked adult rock station KINK (101. 9 FM).

In a three-month period, KPOJ went from 12,000 listeners to almost 80,000 listeners per week, with little promotion or marketing. Previously KPOJ had been airing golden oldies, drawing a 1 percent share.

With numbers like that, KPOJ’s success could very well spawn other stations featuring “progressive” talk in Portland and around the country where underperforming stations may be looking for a new format.

Not a Rovian Move? Yah, right.

This says it all now in regard to the Swift Boat Vets current lie.

Republican Sen. John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, called an ad criticizing John Kerry's military service "dishonest and dishonorable" and urged the White House on Thursday to condemn it as well.

I know many of you know this by now, but the San Francisco Gate has an additional statement.

The White House declined.

Being DIRTY is all they have.

This just In

Rick Springfield has also endorsed Kerry/Edwards and his editorial will be appearing this week in GRIT.
