In a radio commentary today Schlafly – who previously argued that the Bible’s mandate for “compassion” doesn’t apply to immigrants – commemorates the anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty by declaring that the statue “has nothing whatsoever to do with immigration.” Instead, she argued, “people who had nothing to do with this great gift from the French were allowed to paste a plaque on the base of the statue with a quotation that has misrepresented the statue as an invitation to open immigration.”Yeah, it's never come to have that value at all, other than every speech every politician ever made there.
“Remember, it’s the Statue of Liberty, not the Statue of Immigration,” she concludes.

Ah, sometimes, in the current craziness of the GOP, it's good to remember the old, reliable bigots who started it all.
She was Teabaggin' before Teabaggin' was hip!
"Schlafly" is, of course, a Native American name, so none of her ancestors were immigrants.

Funny enough, I went looking for the etymology of "Schlafly" to make this point. But there isn't any information about where the name originates. In fact, the only "Schlafly" references I can find on the web all go back to Phyllis Schlafly and her family. I thought I'd found something with "Schlafly Beer" in St. Louis, but it turns out that that's a company started by her nephew in the 80s. So apparently when her family emigrated to the US they butchered the family name spelling enough that the original name isn't recognizable anymore.
Also of interest - googling "Schlafly etymology" currently has the Wiktionary entry for the word "dumbass" as the fourth choice. It really should be number one if you think about it.
Interesting exegesis by Mrs. Schlafly: How, exactly, does the Bible say that "compassion" isn't supposed to be extended to immigrants? Surely not in the Abraham cycle of stories. You'll not find it in the Jacob/Israel story, seeing as where Jacob got his first two wives from. The Joseph story that dominates the last 13 chapters of Genesis is all about how the Children of Israel came to be established in Egypt, and it's their shabby treatment by the Egyptians that causes God to act in Exodus.
Isaiah, Jeremiah, Micah, Amos? Nope, they're all about compassion for anyone who comes across your path. Jesus? Paul? Not really so much, as both men - itinerants - were heavily dependent on the compassion of strangers.
Maybe it's time we quit listening to this superannuated bitter woman and her ignorant rantings?
Nothing like being a one-person hate crime.
such a xtian she is.
yeah, I remember when the Good Samaritan asked the traveller who had been set upon by thieves whether he was an immigrant?
And when the traveller said "yes", the Good Samaritan said "fuck you, you wetback bastard", kicked him in the teeth, and walked away singing "Jesus loves me"
To utilize the "thought" processes "used" by the reich-wingers...
Someone oughta shoot the bitch.
Give me your hungry, your tired, your poor, I'll piss on 'em, that's what the statue of bigotry says.
Awesome J Neo. RIP Lou
I wonder what her parents and/or grandparents thought when they passed the statue on their way to Ellis Island?
Do you think it was something like "Wow, maybe we should go back. This looks like a liberty statue, which should never be confused with an immigration statue. Let that be a lesson to you ones" ...... in German, of course?
According to Wiki, her great grandfather immigrated from Scotland to Canada, lived there for a while, then "moved" to Michigan, meaning he probably just walked across the border.
She's the great grandchild of an illegal immigrant.
Her family name is obviously German (schlaf means sleep) the -ly at the end must be a Native American addition ;-)
There was no such thing as illegal immigration right through the 19th century. Unless you were Chinese. But most everyone else just bought a ticket on a steamboat, often as not paid for or subsidized by a recruiter.
Of course most of those immigrants were from Northern Europe. Once the balance of immigration started swinging to Southern and Eastern Europeans (who tended to be either browner or Papist or both) around the turn of the century the barriers started slapping into place.
I am no expert on the tourist/worker/student visa system but lets just admit none of it is rigourously afforded against Brits even today. In practice if not in strict legal theory the policy has always been Open Borders for WASPs. Oh and billionaires. It being odd how racial and religious biases drop away when people show up with 10 figure net worths.
Lesson: don't be born poor. Or brown. Unless your brown parents control significant resource extraction operations back home. In which case 'Welcome Juan Chung-Abdullah!!'.
Now citizenship had controls before immigration did. But few WASPs ever suffered either way.
