Take a dip in the Great Lakes these days, and you might get more than you bargained for. That's because, in addition to the water, fish and plant life you might normally expect, the region's waterways are increasingly clogged with plastic debris, according to researchers.
Well why should the oceans get all the major garbage patches, right?

That we are unable to find a suitable means of recycling injection-molded (i.e., thermoformed) plastics--precisely because of a wide range of perverse economic incentives--ought to be lesson #1 in how the "free" capitalist market cannot solve major societal and economic problems on its own, and because of those perverse incentives, is much more likely to create problems.
