I am agog that the right wing screechers like Fox News and Rush are not just keeping their goddamn yaps shut about the Pope.
There is NO UPSIDE for them criticizing the Pope. Zero. None. Nada. Zilch. Their Fundie listeners don't care what the Pope says. Their Protestant listeners don't care what the Pope says. Their conservative Catholic listeners are the ONLY LISTENERS WHO GIVE A RATS ASS WHAT THE POPE SAYS. And by criticizing the Pope you put those conservative Catholic listeners into a quandry - should I listen to Rush/Fox or should I listen to the Pope? At best the cognitive dissonance will be such that they ignore it but at worst you're going to lose a listener/viewer/whatever because of the criticism of the Throne of Peter.
I mean it isn't like they HAVE to talk about it - they ignore shit all of the freaking time. Why do the feel compelled to confront their conservative Catholic listeners with the idea that the Pope doesn't like their ideology all that much? It boggles my mind.

There's no upside to Repukes talking about rape either, but they can't help themselves. If they want to alienate Catholics, all the bestter for the nation. So keep jamming that foot in your mouth, idiots. Hand me the popcorn.
So ... they're worried the Pope will talk a good game in public, but fail to deliver on it, while sneaking some really heinous shit (like the Trans-Pacific Partnership) through in the background?
If I were a rightist -- especially one of a non-Catholic stripe -- I wouldn't worry about ticking off my rank-and-file Catholic allies. But if Pope Francis's pronouncements eventually lead to the departure of my buddies who happen to be bishops, archbishops and cardinals in the U.S. church, that would be something worth worrying about.
Fortunately, I'm not a conservative; so I'm not worried. Just leave some of that popcorn for me, will you?

I'm not sure I understand what their problem is.
