it is not the least bit funny that a desperately mentally ill young man has been left to get that way for at least three years without any effective help. that is an indictment of his family, his community and all of us who ignore the utter lack of mental health facilities and ignore the obviously disturbed among us
he looks like he has achieved his goal-finally he is not an invisible nobody
On the one hand I hope none of you have the misfortune to either become mentally ill, or have a close family member... mother, father, sister, brother, husband, wife, or child become mentally ill and have to get help for them... It's almost impossible unless you've got access to the VA or some kick ass health insurance that actually covers care for mental illness.
The community outreach centers that deal with this if you can't get help through medical or VA channels are all but worthless IF you can get someone to actually listen and do an evaluation if the person you're worried about agrees to it... if they don't agree to be evaluated / don't think there's anything wrong, you're on your own until they either hurt themselves or someone else.
Now for the other side of my conflict... maybe if more people had to navigate getting help for one of their immediate family members we'd have a more compassionate, functioning mental health care system and as a result a more compassionate, caring society.
I support the comments of sukabi -we have issues even trying to get our veterans mental health service! How many suicides did it take to get action on that front?
Re: the hair (or lack thereof). There was an earlier photo of him with long hair. I assume he may have shaved his head and eyebrows before the shooting.
This would be similar to the 9/11 hijackers shaving their body hair in the hotel bathroom before they went to the airport.
the earlier photo that was being circulated was a photo from his yearbook... he was about 16. Other photos from earlier last year show him at a book fair with very short hair.
Mother Jones has an article up that has an interview with one of his long-time friends detailing his behavior changes over the last several years... you should go read it.

Does he have alopecia? Where are his eyebrows?
