I was only six at the time and this is the first car race I can recall seeing on TV (I think it was taped delayed, not live, but to a 6 year old it's the same thing)-- and it had this memorable event of the pace car nearly killing a bunch of people:
This formed the thought in my mind that the pace car was supposed to crash like this -- six year olds are impressionable and stupid (ed. and forty years later...?).
Still, it'll be interesting if Trump, for some bizarre reason the choice to drive the pace car in the Indy 500 this year, does the same thing. It would certainly be a metaphor of his candidacy.
(BTW, in that car in addition to the driver were Tony Hulman who owned the track, Chris Schenkel of ABC, and John freaking Glenn who undoubtedly thought about the irony of his life possibly ending this way considering all the other shit he'd gone through.)

There shouldn't be any doubt that Trump drives like he manages his companies--recklessly.
Passengers should decline the ride....
Trump will be 65 in June. I'm surprised Indy officials would want someone that old and apparently inexperienced to be driving the pace car.
From SI.com:
Trump won't drive Indy 500 pace car, after all
Donald Trump said Thursday that he will not be driving the celebrity pace car in the May 29 race. He says "he may be announcing shortly his intention" to run for president and therefore it would be "inappropriate" to drive the pace car. He also said it would be impossible to fulfill the required practice sessions with his busy schedule.
Probably good that Trump won't drive the pace car after all. THAT would be a disaster...
Oh, and I'm roughly the same age and also remember the 1971 pace car wreck. A couple of months later we visited the track and museum while visiting with my dad's father and stepmom, who lived in Indianapolis.
