Eric Alterman & Josh Marshall (or at least his readers) have something in common (besides not blogrolling Rising Hegemon) and that is having a similar opinion on the "best work of narrative history".
I pretty much share it. I'm still quite partial to Gibbon and the Durants, but as far as writing engrossing works no one does it better than Robert Caro.
If you have not read the Power Broker, or any of the present three-volumes (their will be more coming) of Lyndon Johnson please do so.
The Power Broker is simply the best one-volume biography/history I have ever read, but it is surpassed IMO by the three LBJ books.
