I was thinking about Edwards performance in the New Hampy debates tonight. I think that Edwards did very well during the debate with Clinton, Obama, and Richardson (memo to Richardson camp, its all over but the shouting). Edwards may not win the New Hampshire primary but if the economy continues to tank - by the next presidential election maybe even sooner - then the electorate may be ready en masse to hear Edwards's truth-telling about what's wrong with the American economy.
By then, they'll have disabused themselves of the notion that they're rich people waiting to happen aspirational BS or upper middle class denizens or even members of the middle class at all. They may actually be ready to call themselves -- horrors -- "working people." In fact, they may be happy just to have a job. Forget the fight over affordable health insurance. It will be hope to even have health insurance, period.
For now though, I bet these upwardly mobile folk prefer to see their problems through the soft-focus lens of Obama's hope-filled viewpoint. But you can't put food on the table with hope no matter how inspirational it might be.
