Congress is considering a law that could force some of our favorite radio stations to limit the amount of music played by enacting a performance tax on free broadcast radio. If this performance tax passes, that would not be good for the artists themselves, terrestrial or Internet radio stations or music lovers who enjoy listening to free radio every day (however they listen).
While we agree that musicians deserve support, we have to remember that performance taxes often do not go to the musicians who created the music. Like most music-based copyrights it goes to whomever the copyright holder is and normally this is the publishing company or the record company.
And these companies do not have the best history in paying what is owed to the musicians, right? But we must remember this is the only industry that makes a habit out of suing their customers and fans.
What do other music lovers think?
