Oh for crap's sake!

Bad enough when Americans are stupid, the last thing I need to see is this:

Thirteen percent of Germans would welcome the arrival of a new "Fuhrer," a new study suggests in what may be the most striking example yet of the rise of right-wing extremism in Europe today.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, more than a third of Germans feel the country is "overrun by foreigners," roughly 60 percent would "restrict the practice of Islam" and 17 percent believe Jews have "too much influence."

Old habits die hard.

Did the pollsters include a question about invading Poland?

Let's see. Looking for a strong charismatic leader promising to restore the country to the traditional ways. Preferably with strong commitment to discriminating against Islam. Promises to check rampant intellectualism, liberalism and homosexuality. Strongly committed to a national myth of exceptionalism. Wouldn't blink at the invasion of other countries under false pretenses - especially if it helped the economy.

Thank goodness we don't have 13% of our citizens that would welcome such a leader. Not even the new neo-confederate Tea Bag-GOP alliance would.........uh, I've got to go make some coffee.

Hey, speaking of der Fuhrer, I see that Joe Miller is warming up.

Sorry AT, I hadn't scrolled down to you prior post to see that the Joe Miller thing was already covered.

Aw, that's nothing. I suspect the percentages here in the US would be 50% to 100% greater. Sure, there are nut jobs in Germany, but we've got 'em beat by a long shot.

13% is better than our perpetual 25% batshiters.

in other words, they're less likely to embrace their fascism than the USA?

folks, the gov and US society has been walking the long winding road to acceptable fascism for decades, and ronnie raygun and bushco cemented the deal...

enough to frighten...

but aren't conservatives in charge of the government right now? i'm used to thinking of the far right growing momentum only when the left is in power.

i don't know why germans are being so pissy. they're living large and are better off than us.

According to Geoghegan, "Since 2003, it's not China but Germany, that colossus of European socialism, that has either led the world in export sales or at least been tied for first. Even as we in the United States fall more deeply into the clutches of our foreign creditors -- China foremost among them -- Germany has somehow managed to create a high-wage, unionized economy without shipping all its jobs abroad or creating a massive trade deficit, or any trade deficit at all. And even as the Germans outsell the United States, they manage to take six weeks of vacation every year. They're beating us with one hand tied behind their back."

Eh, where did they find these people? Sachsen-Anhalt?

"According to the Christian Science Monitor, more than a third of Germans feel the country is "overrun by foreigners," roughly 60 percent would "restrict the practice of Islam" and 17 percent believe Jews have "too much influence.""

"Restricting the practice of Islam" may mean, as it has in my area, things such as limiting the height of the minaret on the new mosque (next to the parish church. Also, there are indeed radical mosques which have to be monitored. "Overrun by foreigners": see the diversity-embracing articles during last summer's World Cup. For the last one, see Rick Sanchez.
