Rep. David Dreier (R-Calif.) said on Monday evening that he didn't
believe highly expensive health care should be provided to uninsured
patients with pre-existing conditions.
Funny thing--before Reagan, that statement alone probably would have cost him his seat.
Now, it will likely gain him votes. All the "personal responsibility" fetishists will think, "well, he's only telling the truth," where, in fact, he's advocating on behalf of a failed system, and no one will call it what it is.
So much for E Pluribus Unum, and everyone having interests in common. Thirty or forty years ago, the business buzzword was synergy, the concept that the parts could work to make the whole larger than the sum of its parts. But, that also works in reverse--if all the parts are negative, then the negatives can combine to make a larger negative than the parts. Think of a system that refuses to control the introduction of carcinogens into the environment, combined with food and pharmaceutical industries that game the regulatory bodies in order to advance the sale of potentially inadequately tested drugs, GMOs and highly processed foodstuffs, and a health care industry that operates with profit foremost in mind, and the results could be synergistic--increasing illness creating losses in productivity, which then results in health care costs going up at a time when corporate and government revenues are going down, and the desire for increasing profits resulting in wholesale destruction of the ecosystem and public health, of the regulatory framework necessary to prevent that destruction, and of the common weal. It could all combine to undo society much, much faster than one might expect.
