And now PANIC!

It used to be sometime in March or so that there was a traditional freak-out in whatever Party was the challengers in the upcoming election as the almost certain nominee suffers a temporary setback. But this year the GOP decided to get it started early.

As fun as this all is, and as someone who certainly isn't a Republican it is quite fun...once I get my jaw back in place, I just do not think Gingrich is going to get the nomination. Now that he's having his little run the powers-that-be in the Party are going to step up and make sure Mitt gets it.

However the caveat to the normal course of business is that the GOP has done everything in its power to let the crazies run free, the only real question is whether they can get them back in the bottle? It won't be easy.

The Kabuki dance of "Willard Milhous Romney isn't one of the crazies" has reached its climax. That's the brand differentiation you'll get between Pall Mall and Chesterfield. They're hoping it's enough to last 'till November. Now Mitt crushes them with cash.

News Corp. will continue the charade, because Fox thralls (27%) will vote the way Fox tells them to vote. They need another 23% to win, and they won't get it as long as people are convinced Mitt is a real Republican.

In your guts. Every last stinkin' one of 'em.

All of this is really pretty goofy. Romney was always a long shot in SC (and pretty much everywhere else in the South, except Florida) because of the whole magic underwear thing. Talibangelical social conservatives dominate the GOP in the region and they regard Mormons as devil worshippers, so they were never going to vote for Mittens. Combined with the fact that Gingrich is from Georgia and enthusiastically panders to the basest prejudices of the region, this was pretty much a given after Perry dropped out.

Yes, those 20th century Pentacostal heretics can't stand 19th century Millenarian heretics. Got to wonder what happens when they realize that Gingrich is actually Catholic, though. My money is on them despising the LDS more, but they won't be very happy about having to vote for a "Papist" instead.

SC is the craziest of them all, but I think this changes the narrative for FL. If the last Rick standing closes shop this week (which I doubt he does), and with Mitts tax returns coming out, Newt has a great shot at FL. If Rick stays in, it will be close.

A week is looooong time though. Newt may, in the ultimate pander, offer to open up his marriage to Minnie Mouse while stumping in Orlando. Might hurt a bit.

A lot of the Evangelicals/Fundamentalists have papered over their aversion to Papistry owing to their alliances on abortion, gender roles, and Teh Gay. I do not think it will hold, but, for the time being, this is not as big a barrier as it would have been in the past.

Get `em back in the bottle? Trust me on this, there are not nearly enough men in white suits and butterfly nets to make that happen.

Nor nearly enough institutions to put `em in if caught.

Reagan saw to that.
