Can't be good

So to cut my coffee intake (well, actually to cut down on the shit I put in coffee intake) I started to use a coffee press.

Does anyone else feel like the thing is literally staining your teeth while you drink its result?

I don't know why, I just feel that way.

But then again, I'm kind of a crazy asshole* so YMMV.

*sadly, not in a Melanie Griffith in Something Wild kind of way; but fortunately not in a Ron Paul voter kind of way either.

Former aspiring barrista Miss Pillow brought home a french press from work one day and announced my paper filter coffee maker was now obsolete. Again.

I've still got the MrCoffee, and the paper filters. If I ever need caffeine enough to want finely ground coffee bean powder in my coffee, I'll just sprinkle some in. Or grab a No-Doz.

My press works fine. Don't ground the beans to powder.. put in less than 1/2 cup... mix with spoon...

Push the plunger down SLOWLY.. maybe you are pushing too hard.

I often make italian pot expresso and mix the two... BUZZ!!!

The important thing for a french press is: grind coarse. There's a direct negative correlation between the amount of time you steep (minutes in the press, fewer minutes in a drip, even fewer for espresso) and the fineness of the grind. Coffee grounds that are too fine can cause you to break your carafe.

Also, presses are much easier to keep clean than drip machines. (We never use soap on the metal parts, just a good rinse.)

French press coffee has oils in it that otherwise get absorbed into the paper filter when you use the drip method. That's could be what you're experiencing.

Are pearly whites necessary in your line of work? I gave up on having white teeth when I determined that my coffee intake was directly related to my efficiency at my work.

Not incidentally, these oils cause your low (LDL = bad) cholesterol levels to spike, and you really should be pouring your pressed coffee through a paper filter to absorb them.
