As Education Dies...

...so does a country's future.

In nearly twenty of the fifty largest cities in the United States, a grim statistic has been unearthed.  Fewer than half of the students who entered high school in 2003 completed their degree requirements and graduated. In Detroit, which has the lowest graduation rate of the top fifty cities, not even one in four students finished high school!  Not even one in four!

Those cold-water-in-the-face sobering statistics were presented in a report released today by the America’s Promise Alliance, which hopes to draw attention to poor graduation rates and crumbling educational infrastructure, especially in urban areas around the U.S. of A.

These startling findings demonstrate the extreme position that we see in regard to the sorry state of education under the brown shirts of BushCheneyCo's so-called "No Child Left Behind."  Apparently that does not apply to kids in urban areas.

And if we do not take action soon, this country will be faced with a permanent underclass who have not graduated high school and will be far under prepared for the high tech jobs and careers of the future.

Do we really want to be in a position, four years from now where a majority of students who enter high school have not graduated? What kind of country do we want to become?
