I was born in the Midwest (Minnesota to be precise) and have lived here all my life.
This is most wise:
... the Green Bay Packers have moved up last call at Lambeau Field for Saturday night's wild-card playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings? Alcohol sales will cease at the beginning of the third quarter instead of the end.
The Packers' web site attributed the decision to "the game's unique circumstances: Saturday night, playoffs and a division rival."
Frankly the wisest decision would be to ban alcohol sales at all games involving exclusively the Vikings vs. Packer vs.or Bears no matter what the order.
For the first time since 1994, the Violence Against Women Act does not
exist, because House Republicans didn't want the bill to protect
immigrants, the LGBT community, and Native Americans — groups added to
the bill by the Senate in April — so, after some futile attempts
at compromise, they decided they'd rather let the law expire than
protect millions of women who desperately need those resources.
"I was chasing the Speaker all over the House floor last night, trying to talk to him and his staff," King said on CNN on Wednesday morning. "He kept telling me, wait until the vote is over, wait until the fiscal cliff vote is over, everything will be taken care of. And then he was gone. He refused to meet with us. He actually yelled at Congressman LoBiondo, saying, 'I'm not meeting with you people.'"
LoBiondo spokesman Jason Galanes confirmed that King's account was "accurate."
I'd say it couldn't happen to a more appropriate person...but then I remember what the rest of the people in this story are like.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Wednesday said House Speaker John Boehner and congressional Republicans are to blame for the "continued suffering" after superstorm Sandy.
"This is not a Republican or Democratic issue," Christie said during a press conference in Trenton. "National disasters happen in red states and blue states and states with Democratic governors and Republican governors. We respond to innocent victims of natural disasters not as Republicans or Democrats, but as Americans. Or at least we did until last night."
"This was the Speaker's decision — his alone," Christie said.
It was only a few
days before the nation would go over the fiscal cliff, no bipartisan
agreement was in sight, and Reid had just publicly accused Boehner of
running a “dictatorship” in the House and caring more about holding onto
his gavel than striking a deal.
“Go f— yourself,” Boehner sniped as he pointed his finger at Reid, according to multiple sources present.
Reid, a bit startled, replied: “What are you talking about?”
Because this is one of those times the statement is in better taste than the reality.
Politics and the GOP -- always about the IMPORTANT things:
Gov. Tom Corbett scheduled a news conference for Wednesday to announce the filing of a federal lawsuit against the NCAA over stiff sanctions imposed against Penn State in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
The news conference announcing the filing in U.S. District Court in Harrisburg was set to be held at the university's State College campus.
The Penn State Football program, of course, was sanctioned for turning a blind eye and deaf ear to a lengthy period of sexual abuse toward minors by Jerry Sandusky.
Corbett was on the Board of Regents of PSU as well as Pennsylvania Attorney General during a period of time in which Sandusky was not prosecuted.
Given that his majority whip and his majority leader voted against the fiscal cliff deal (delay) the coup plotting seems rather obvious.
Good luck Mr. Tangerine Man.
Hey unemployed, seniors, the disabled, poor kids I know you may be facing cuts in benefits you desperately need and that this stuff does seem to be the essence of government and y'know maintaining any semblance of a quality of life. The rest of you might be concerned about your taxes, or what a fairer share for some might be.
But the fiscal cliff is about other things that the Village takes far more seriously:
In case you were wondering why politics is so screwed up -- politicians take guys like Chris Cillizza seriously -- because they think you take him seriously.
Because we start out the new year having our manufactured phrases running into each other.
For we are alleged to be simultaneously "falling off a cliff" while "hitting the ceiling".
It's almost as if we're being governed by bad salespeople.
Oh, wait.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was hospitalized Sunday with a blood clot, which is related to the concussion she suffered recently while recovering from the flu, according to a State Department spokesman.
Let's hope for a quick and full recovery. Because not only is recovery here possible it is highly likely.
Recovery not so likely, here:
Boehner continued: "Republicans made every effort to reach the ‘balanced’ deficit agreement that the president promised the American people, while the president has continued to insist on a package skewed dramatically in favor of higher taxes that would destroy jobs. We’ve been reasonable and responsible.
A 31-year-old woman was arrested on Saturday and charged with
second-degree murder as a hate crime in connection with the death of a
man who was pushed onto the tracks of an elevated subway station in
Queens and crushed by an oncoming train.
The woman, Erika Menendez, selected her victim because she believed him
to be a Muslim or a Hindu, Richard A. Brown, the Queens district
attorney, said.
“The defendant is accused of committing what is every subway commuter’s
nightmare: Being suddenly and senselessly pushed into the path of an
oncoming train,” Mr. Brown said in an interview.
In a statement,
Mr. Brown quoted Ms. Menendez, “in sum and substance,” as having told
the police: “I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate
Hindus and Muslims ever since 2001 when they put down the twin towers
I’ve been beating them up.” Ms. Menendez conflated the Muslim and Hindu
faiths in her comments to the police and in her target for attack,
officials said.
The victim, Sunando Sen, was born in India and, according to a roommate, was raised Hindu.
What can you really say -- morally reprehensible and really really extra stupid?
I'm going to go on out on not too much of a limb and say I bet I know Ms. Menendez's viewing preferences.
Update:
Take with a grain of salt, but according to a Gawker commenter:
SoccerMummy Pamela Geller should be proud. One of her ads is up at the station where this happened.
Double Olympic champion Mo Farah has said he has been questioned by US border officials on suspicion of being a terrorist.
The team GB star even got out his two gold medals to show the customs officers who he was, but to no avail.
Farah, who was born in Somalia and moved to Britain with his father
when he was eight, was detained as he was heading to Portland, Oregon,
to spend Christmas with his family.
He moved to America last year to work with his coach, marathon champion Alberto Salazar, at the Nike headquarters.
Despite his international fame, the long distance runner revealed he
often gets stopped at customs because of his Somali origin.
Farah, aged 29, told The Sun: "I couldn't believe it. Because of my
Somali origin I get detained every time I come through US Customs.
I'd like to remind Hobby Lobby that as I am a liberal they should know that my favorite hobbies are recreational sex and performing non-abortions.
Oklahoma City-based Hobby Lobby will defy a federal law that requires
employee health care plans to provide insurance coverage for types of
contraception that the firm’s owners consider to be “abortion-causing
drugs and devices,” an attorney for the company said Thursday.

With Wednesday’s rejection of an emergency stay of that
federal health care law by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Hobby
Lobby and sister company Mardel could be subject to fines of up to $1.3
million a day beginning Tuesday.
Of course, what they are resisting is contraceptives and the morning-after pill which doesn't cause abortions.
That Lincoln talked about? Not the modern Republican Party that is for sure:
With no health insurance and not enough money for a doctor, Laura Johnson is long accustomed to treating her ailments with a self-written prescription: home remedies, prayer and denial...
After she collapsed last year and landed in in a local emergency room, doctors diagnosed her with congestive heart failure, high blood pressure and hypothyroid. They ordered her not to work. She arranged a Social Security disability benefit, and she enrolled in Medicaid, the government-furnished insurance program for the poor. She used her Medicaid card to secure needed prescription medications. Her ailments stabilized.
But this year, the state determined that the $819 a month she draws in disability payments exceed the allowable limit. By the federal government's reckoning, her $9,800 annual income made her officially poor. But under the standards set by Louisiana, she was too well off to receive Medicaid.
T
his is how Johnson, 57, finds herself back amid the roughly 49 million Americans who lack health insurance.
All because Louisiana's asshole Governor -- like so many Republicans -- cannot go along with any measure that is associated with Bar-lack Obama.
So Bobby Jindal's message to you Laura Johnson is...die!
