So, you are a blogger with a need for a giant tub of pretzels, some backbacon, and wanting to talk with Iowans who have not been repeatedly debriefed by the mainstream media, where do you go?
I puzzled until my puzzler was sore and it hit me. Go to Costco where you can buy items in massive quantities in a huge warehouse and chat with some folks there over the free samples of nasty soda and pasta cups -- yup, little pasta cups. Not bad really. Samples of soda, not good. Yuck.
In a completely unscientific fashion, I sauntered up to several Iowans and after making small talk about the weather, hey its what people talk about here in the Midwest, I asked if they were going to "go caucusing." Sure enough, several people said they were going and some of them said it excitedly. Not everyone in Iowa is jaded by the media frenzy.
However, after talking with several people a pattern began to emerge: people who are interested in Democrats are excited and ready to go caucusing, while the Republican supporters are not as enthusiastic. Two people I spoke with who are supporting some Republican candidates are not going -- either because they have to work, have a family to take care of, or are just not interested in their candidates.
The Dem supporters were enthusiastic and immediate when asked if they were going. One has to wonder if this means a lack of enthusiasm for the GOP.
Boy, I hope so.
