Because of his thoughts on a private listserve can be dangerous.
I mean, what happens when we find out John Derbyshire belongs to a listserve for racist-furries?
Oh, that's right -- nothing. It's called the Pat Buchanan/Washington Post Conservative columnists rule. Sometimes referred to as IOKIYAR.

Attributed criticism of the screwed up standard operating procedures of the US jourmanalists on a private listserv will cost you your job at the WaPo if you're liberal, but unattributed criticism published publicly on the pages of The Atlantic won't even tarnish a reputation!
As much as the WaPo op-ed writers always stand up to carp about anonymous commenters on the intertubes, they're always the first Heathers in line to anonymously bash or allow their friends to anonymously bash those who threaten their cushy way of life.

Nothing? Hell, promotion! Racists they got, but furries? That's a POV Fred Hiatt is bound to find compelling.
the only time this wasn't so was watergate.
I swore to myself I wasn't going to ask this, but by "racist furries" do you mean, for example, white people who dress in furry costumes and look down on black people who dress in furry costumes? Or do you mean people who dress in red furry costumes and look down on people who dress in blue furry costumes? Or maybe people who dress as lemurs to have group sex with people who dress as rodents looking down on people who dress as chickens to have sex with . . .
No. You know what? I was right in the first place. I don't want to know.
