He's waiting for the Deficit Faerie

Rand Paul, like most Republicans and say, Ben Nelson, appears to live in a world of magic and whimsy:

...on Fox News Sunday, Paul said that his focus in the Senate would be reducing the “mountains and mountains of debt.” But when asked to square that with his desire to spend trillions of dollars on tax cuts, he replied that, when it comes to extending Bush’s tax cuts, “I’m not seeing it as a cost to government”:

Ah yes, the Deficit Faerie, the magical being that allows you to say you are a deficit hawk by invading and occupying other nations without raising but rather cutting taxes. It comes every two years in the form of David Broder.

Who do you blame when your kid is a brat,
Pampered and spoiled like a Siamese cat?
Blaming the kids is a lie and a shame.
You know exactly who's to blame --
The mother and the father.

Quite apart from the typical Broderisms, people like the Pauls know this is just dogwhistle stuff for cutting welfare, and for the anti-internationalists, foreign aid and payments to the UN.

That's the soil in which the "big gummint" argument has always been rooted. These bozos might actually believe that their taxes will go down if all the "giveaway" programs to you-know-who were eliminated, but, the raw numbers say otherwise. Kill every one of those programs and there'd still be a hefty deficit.

And it will be that way as long as Americans think that fighting multiple wars and spending more on "defense" than the rest of the world combined is an imperative.

But, in a weird, unsettling way, it's an indication that zombie Ronnie Raygun is still running Washington and the Republican Party.

Quite correct. But seen from the Canadian vantage point, there's something else going on, too.

We don't have a big problem here in Cabnada with either a military budget or racism, but we do have lot of suckers up here--- and apparently there are an equal percentage in the UK and Europe--- want to believe that they can have all the advantages of the social welfare state PLUS low taxes...

And all that is standing in the way of achieving this goal are some boogeymen figures ("politicians" or "bureaucrats" or "unions") who need to be dealt with in some harsh manner... "Just get rid of 'em all!"

These same suckers also believe there is a magic solution to crime, but the magic solution is being deliberately thwarted by "constitutional rights" and "lawyers" and "the system"... but if only the police were allowed to beat the shit out of people or shoot them or lock 'em all up and throw away the key, presto! There'd be no crime!

But I guess if you've been taught from a very young age that prayer can magically overcome reality, then this kind of magical thinking would seem totally normal...
