The notion that "if only someone armed had been there" the next time (probably before the end of this month) some asshole goes on a spree shooting -- notice how it works in broad daylight amongst those who are
actually trained in the use of weapons.
All nine people injured during a dramatic confrontation between police
and a gunman outside the Empire State Building were wounded by gunfire
from the two officers, police said Saturday, citing ballistics evidence.
You cannot really criticize the officers for firing, but imagine if those who are NOT actually the police would act in such a situation?

This is the world the NRA wants. Fear the guns, fear those who own them, and especially fear those who represent them.
Enjoy.
What the lunatic gun nuts will not acknowledge is that it is really, really hard to teach someone to react appropriately and effectively in those kinds of situations, and even then it goes south fairly often. This is why the police and military spend so much time training their personnel how to do it. You are not going to learn this in some civilian gun class. Ever. I used to know a bunch of Chicago cops and there worst fear was armed civilians doing this kind of shit.
Actually the gun-nuts I've heard from are claiming that the average conceal-carry permit holder is better trained than the cops. Really.
Can't criticize?
16 shots is a bit much.
Is the point to disarm or disable someone, or to execute them?
I am not positive what the range to target was when the cops opened fire. They as patrolmen are ill equipped to shoot outside of maybe 15 yards.
Had they been trained and equipped properly it would have taken a grand total of 3 bullets, but with longer range and more accurate weapons.
There is a reason cops carry Rifles in this day and age, and THIS is a prime example of why!
Even the military only uses pistols when they are overrun. Sad story but give then credit: they didn't pull back and wait for swat team, they Tried.

Wait a minute - they were trying to get one guy, and shot nine other people??
Sounds pretty fuckin' incompetent and trigger-happy to me....
They put ten holes in the murderer out of 14 shots fired. That means it's certain the majority of wounded bystanders were injured by bullets that had first passed through the perpetrator, which they tend to do.
Also, judging by the tape, the perpetrator committed suicide by cop.
Hey, relax folks. It's the NRA's world. We just cower in it.

My cop friends in Chicago always said that the best weapon for home defense was a 12-guage pump shotgun (more reliable than semi-automatics) loaded with number 8 bird shot. You just point and shoot (no aiming necessary), and, at any likely range in the home, it will pretty much blow a massive hole in the intruder. It will not, however, go through the walls and kill your family members or neighbors.
Had they been trained and equipped properly it would have taken a grand total of 3 bullets, but with longer range and more accurate weapons.
Keep fucking that walrus, homie. Even military snipers, pretty much the best in the business, cannot guarantee that. Do try to visit the planet earth some day.
If you believe that 12 ga. bird shot nonsense, good luck to you, Homie.

I will believe Chicago cops over a wanker who makes absurd statements like yours.
a shotgun IS best for protection, just harder under a pillow, or fitting into a pocket.
Shorter NRA: You talkin' to me?
Once a police officer has commited to pulling the trigger they are commited to "deadly force". Winging someone or shooting the gun out of their hand only happens in the movies.
