Documentary Recommendation

If you live close enough to a place to see documentaries do so.

Attaturk doesn't live in a massive American City, but he does live in a sizeable one, which to his surprise is actually learning that it can profitably be hip (within reason of course, the Midwest tolerates "hipness" but not flamboyance). In any case, within my town there are actually now seven, yes, seven screens that actually show "Art House" films. This means that a couple of them are usually devoted to documentaries.

And it has been a great year for those.

One, which I saw last night, caused me to laugh and cringe at the same time -- mostly over people's ability to just mindlessly consume information which is at its core morally outrageous. Explaining the success of FoxNews undoubtedly.

The film is "The Yes Men", a documentary about some satirical protesters, who essentially consistently pull-one-over on seminars and conferences who think, mistakenly that they represent the World Trade Organization, 180% from reality.

They make presentations to groups who think they represent the WTO. At the core of their presentations are incredibly amoral messages, given in a matter-of-fact tone. The seminar audiences just sits there and absorb it, never thinking, though it is clear that the presentation is the embodiment of evil in a smoothe package.

Just see it if you can. It is not a great film, but it is a meaningful, funny, and ultimately disturbing one.
