Senator Harkin

There is all sorts of tut-tutting going on about Iowa's role being too important in the primary season. We go through it after every presidential election cycle. I happen to agree with a lot of the criticism but it isn't like we're South Dakota. We are a homogenous bunch here in the heartland, a little parochial and a step behind the times. Hell, we played 6 on 6 high school women's basketball until what seemed just a couple years ago. But I'll tell you what we do have: Senator Tom Harkin. From Glenn Greenwald:

The column goes on and on like that, also naming Debbie Stabenow, Mary Landrieu, and Jeff Bingaman as Senators who virtually tripped over their own feet running away from the Feingold Resolution. There were a few -- very few -- honorable exceptions:

Dodd must not have checked with Sen. Tom Harkin (Iowa). "The president broke the law and he needs to be held accountable," he said. "Talk about high crimes and misdemeanors!" Harkin said he'll vote for the Feingold resolution -- if it comes up.

With a few notable exceptions (Feingold and Harkin to name most of them) the Democrats don't even deserve the minority status we are stuck with. From this humble fringe blogger to all those elected representatives doing our work, I implore you don't stand for something. Just wait a little longer for the president and his party to regain their footing. Don't stand for something. They'll play right into your hands if you only sit by doing nothing. Don't put yourself out in front on an issue. Miscalculate the political climate and give deference to those who will do you harm. And by all means, let those wackos Feingold and Harkin set a standard you can never attain.

UPDATE:

After I posted, I read Tena on Molly Ivins, then Molly Ivins. Follow the link. What they said.
