No, not that one. The one it causes -- many conservatives being xenophobic jackasses.
Oh, sorry, they've already started.
The liberal media have always been uncomfortable with "American exceptionalism" - the belief that the United States is unique among nations, a leader and a force for good. And they are no happier with America's rejection of soccer than with its rejection of socialism.
What the hell does that even mean? ESPN is the liberal media? Compared to what, Rupert Murdoch's Fox Soccer Channel?
And a classic criticism repeated again:
No game in which actually scoring goals is of such little importance could possibly occupy the attention of average Americans.
This explains so much about why we are perpetually in Iraq and Afghanistan, because we sure don't make many goals.
Though this low scoring criticism remains bizarre, without Larry Craig, Jim Gibbons, and Mark Sanford around the only conservative that scores much is Nikki Haley.
This Summer I'm going to watch baseball, and the NBA finals, and I'll await the Fall to see how the Minnesota Vikings will blow it this time; but for the next month I'm watching all the soccer I can.
As far as the xenophobes are concerned, Zinedine Zidane speaks for me!

Considering how the other side of the aisle plays the refs, you'd think they’d be great soccer fans.
Go Blackhawks!
power hungry lee atwater wannabees slandering a woman as a "whore" in order to undermine her influence is an old tactic that can be traced back to ancient history.
Well, it is almost as boring as hockey...
That is one whiny son of a bitch. If the media is pumping World Cup Soccer it's because they think they can sell you some soap - not because they hate America. It is the biggest single-sport event in the entire world and the United States, being the biggest market in the world, is an untapped revenue stream. Ever hear of capitalism?
what a maroon. any mention of 'liberal media' has to be laughed at.
the media loves chanting USA USA at the drop of the hat.
I love the cluelessness of the ones who try to explain how boring the game is because it is quite difficult to score. These critics are usually the same ones who try to tell me how exciting the NFL is. Here are the facts: The average NFL game runs over 3.5 hours of real time and the ball is actually in play somewhere between 7 to 10 minutes. The athletes are pretty good but have evolved into highly specialized robots who do the coaches' bidding with improvisation forbidden. The game is way over-officiated which adds to the misery of trying to watch an event which is mostly a bunch of oversized men standing around waiting to be told what to do.
