I'll take Brazil, you have to take, oh...New Zealand.
Seriously, other than wanting to throttle anyone blowing those goddamned vuvuzelas (if you don't know yet, you will, oh gawd, you will!) who are you picking in the World Cup?
I usually like to go with the sentimental unfavorite. Will it be North Korea or that wellspring of international bad feeling 15 years after their genocide Serbia? It's a tough choice. In an upset and for old times sake to recall a great prick from the past Alfredo Stroessner I'll go with Paraguay.
Karl - If you're looking for a sentimental favorite, have you thought about Argentina? They have an outstanding team and I hear they are a favorite of Kissinger.
I'm gonna go with both heart and mind and pick Italy to retain the World Cup championship.
A peek at the Ladbrokes site has England at some ridiculous 7 to 1 odds, while Germany is double the money at 14/1, the Azzurri are at 16/1 and France is 20/1. Even the Portugese (at 22/1) appear much more likely to win this tourney than the English.
Ladbrokes has obviously installed some homer odds, here. Yes, the English might well go a little further into the tournament with the massive change in tactics that the new Italian coach will probably bring, but they lack the level of talent to win the tournament.
Yes, Spain and Fwance both look very good. As a general rule I would usually put the Spaniards in the same choker category as the Dutch but this time around they seem buoyed by their Euro 2008 win. As for the dramatic abilities of the Italians one only has to look at the success of actors like Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.
Don't think Italy are going to do anything. They're super-old and they left some of their best players (esp. Cassano) off the team.
I think Spain are almost a prohibitive favorite. It's basically a super team made up of the best from Barcelona and Real Madrid (save Messi and Ronaldo, of course). If a South American country is going to do it I think it's more likely Argentina than Brazil. If Messi, Higuain and Tevez can combine effectively it's going to be serious trouble.
Since I was all in for the Stanley Cup the husband says we can't watch the World Cup. So I'll probably root for some team that won't go very far. Is the USA in it?

Der Mannschaft!
Cameroon for me! And go Blackhawks!
Fixer, I agree (well I can dream, n'est-ce pas ?) . But it would be "Die Mannschaft".
Spain has a great chance at taking this thing. Brazil is always fun to watch - but I'm giving the edge to Pau Gasol's homeland.

The team with the best legs.

Holland. Definitely Holland.
However, my wife wants me to root for her team, I'd be quite surprised to see the Socceroos past second round of knock outs.
heh/
Just told Mrs Arrows about the 16/1odds for Italy. She suggested we place five large on the Azzurri.
Gonna think about this one.....possibly box the Italians and the Germans for an effective 7 and a half to one.
hmmm....
Netherlands. Wouldn't bet on the Italian Diving Team this year, but France and Spain both look good, too.
