Beaten to the Punch

In the opinion section of the Washington Post (where else, really?) comes an editorial about Hugo Chavez that undoubtedly has some ring of creepy truth, no doubt emphasized by it's creepy author:

Shortly after midnight on July 16, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez reached back in time. He presided at the exhumation of the remains of Simón Bolívar -- Latin America's greatest independence hero, who helped liberate the region from Spain in the 19th century, and the object of Chávez's personal and political obsession.

The skeleton was pulled apart. Pieces were removed, such as teeth and bone fragments, for "testing." The rest was put in a new coffin with the Chávez government's seal. Chávez, who also tweeted the proceedings, gave a rambling speech in which he asked Christ to repeat his Lazarus miracle and raise the dead once more. He also apparently conversed with Bolívar's bones.

Of course, it takes the author, Thor Halvorssen about 4/5ths of the column to tell you his cousin is running against Chavez but not that his father was a rather controversial figure in Venezuela himself -- the Post itself never bothers. It's the Liz Cheney Rule, I guess.

But the real question is, how long until the Republicans are off to Reagan Library to repeat this trick?

hehehe...

Hugo Chavez is a certifiable lunatic, every bit as crazy as those other two leftie favorites Amadinnerjacket in Iran and Lil' Kim so woanwy in North Korea.

Chavez loves to do things that cause people from the proper circles to get all pissy. Mission Accomplished sir, keep it up.

As far as "leftie" favorites go, Kim is a totalitarian monarchist despot who treats his people like crap, so I see no reason why any lefty would support him, except perhaps for imaginary lefty strawmen concocted in the feverish imaginations of fearful ultraconservatives. Similarly, I have no use for Ahmajinedad, a demagogue of limited talents who was elected under dubious circumstances and tries to maintain his popularity by blustering and appealing to the fears and inadequacies of his constituents. I had enough of that with George Bush.

But Chavez, yeah, he rocks.

Isn't it just a bit odd that the foundation run by the author of the editorial gets significant amounts of its funding from far right-wing foundations in the U.S.?

C'mon Montag, that's just one of those amazing coincidences.
