Ironically, it wasn't all that long ago that "they" were talking about the Catholics* in these terms - for instance, some might have said that Douthat is the Satanic agent of the Great Whore of Babylon (the Pope). Some might still say that. I don't.
It's an American tradition going back at least to the founding. I guess that it's time for the Catholics to wail on the neuvo weak now that they have some power.
The NY Times wants this, Anonymous, just like the WaPo does. It passes for "balanced coverage" by media that have profoundly lost their way and don't hold themselves accountable -- nor do they know how anymore.
