I think the idea is the Republicans want to find ways of radicalizing American Muslims so they can be more effectively demonized. You're missing the point, in other words.
I suspect that if we had subjected Dublin to six weeks of "shock and awe" bombing, and then invaded and occupied Ireland, sent in special forces teams at night to raid people's houses and kill their families and kept on doing that for nearly a decade, the Irish-Americans in this country would be "radicalized," too.
Of course, we didn't have to do that. We had the banks and bond traders take care of Ireland for us....
Very visible elements of our society and media constantly push the idea that America is a Christian state and Muslims are our enemies, that Muslims cannot be loyal to this country and we are pitted in a culture war against one another. How surprising then that some misguided desperate folks internalize that meme and act out on it. I suspect they've watched too much Fox News.
