Too bad we didn't have polling three hundred years ago, because I'm betting that percentage hasn't changed much over time.
But, thanks to applied modern mathematics, I think we're getting a handle on what percentage of the population goes through life completely unconscious.
Dude, go to KungFu Monkey and look for 27% batshit crazy. John Rogers explains it all incredibly well. And besides, everybody should read Rogers everyday. Especially if you are a fan of his tv show Leverage. He's also the guy with the famous LOTR/ Atlas Shrugs statement, that even Krugman has quoted.
Privatize the Profits! Socilaize the Costs!

...interesting, jimmiraybob and Dee Loralei, any chance you could provide us with some links to Balloon Juice and Kungfoo Monkey? I tried to google 'em and came up dry... thanks!
For John Rogers posts about the 27% of Americans who we can all be surprised to remember how to breathe, the correct Google term to use is the "Crazification Factor". You can find a link here.
Note that the observation about the Crazification Factor was based on the percentage of voters who voted for Alan Keyes during the Obama/Keyes Senate race.
John Cole often talks about crazy-ass Republicans, but I can't think of any 27%-er posts on his site offhand. Not like Rogers pretty-much-definiative take on the whole idea (which statistics continues to bear out time and time again...)

those bell curve dudes forgot to mention the numbers of stoopid whites. the far outnumber the blacks.
26% of Americans don't know that the earth revolves around the sun.
26% of Americans are impervious to facts or knowledge. Many of them vote. And there it is.

Because President Bush's greatest failing was his incessant pandering towards the British, of course.
I believe that John Cole at Baloon Juice has somewhat studied the 26% phenomenon.
