Wait a minute....what?

Really?

Mitt Romney’s campaign strategist, Matt Rhoades, recently revealed the Republican candidate’s historical role model: James K. Polk, the president from 1845-1849.
James K. Polk is famous -- okay, in 2012 we may be stretching the term "famous" for a one-termer that came between Jackson & Lincoln -- for a few things.

1. Starting a bogus and illegal war with Mexico
2. Almost starting a bogus and illegal war with England
3. All so that slavery would try to expand upon and hasten the coming of the Civil War.

...oh, and kicking the bucket a few months after he left office.

So in other words, what the modern world would call a War Criminal of the First Order. Plus, I'll be damned if I'm going to rename my place of residence to being in "Romney County".

I expect Polk would win the contest for president fewest people have ever heard of, in spite of the big stuff that happened during his presidency. In that sense, it's an innocuous choice, which is probably the real reason for it.

Wouldn't President Wendell Willkie have been a better choice given the Mitt's (R-Desperation) pick of Ayn Rand Jr. for V.P.?

Pre-emptive and/or Retroactive Disclaimer: We don't play by the liberal facts and new fangled arithmatics so don't be nit-pickin' the "President Willkie" thing.

We create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll say something again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's writers…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we make up.

Polk is code for "I will do Big, Unpopular Things that will make it impossible for me to seek a second term, like dismantle the tax code, the regulatory state, and the remaining tatters of a safety net."

Didn't Bill O'Reily win a Polk?

I suspect one of his handlers gave him a copy of "Presidents No One Remembers" and said, "pick one."

That way, when he was asked this very silly question, he was prepared with an answer that would cause everyone to go, "huh, who the fuck is he?," thus making him seem far more knowledgeable than he actually is.

Call it reverse dumbfuckery.

At Ft. Polk, La there is a sign saying it was named for Leonidas Polk the Confederate general just so no one thinks it's named for Pres. Polk

You're being rather hard on the man.

Polk came into office with four definite goals. He completed all four of them -- and he did it with the express intention of not running for a second term. He was the first President who didn't run for re-election.

And as Newt Gingrich would be the first to point out, he was the only Speaker of the House to become President.
