Many of us have been following with ever increasing saddness the mockery of a debate and discussion over immigration in the United States. Right-wing crackpots, the new new isolationists, white supremacists, Christian extremists, separatists, milita groups, racists, and others have weighed in on this issue, alright screamed in their many strange and disturbing voices.
But now we have Mr. Ted Hayes climbing on board. Hayes has always been a charlatan, a reactionary and a self-aggrandizing phony. Did I leave anything out? Hayes styles himself as some kind of "king of the homeless" and has always worked closely with the LAPD. Not exactly a friendly position for the homeless, believe you me.
Hayes has never had a significant base of support in the Black community. A few years ago many of you remember, he called the police on the social movement Food Not Bombs for feeding the homeless. And this from someone who claims to befriend the homeless.
Hayes has always had his eyes squarely on the media and his own spin factory centering around, well... himself. His recent forays into "anti-immigrant action" have all been dismal, poorly attended affairs in which the anti-immigrant demonstrators have been greatly outnumbered by immigrants' rights supporters (including larger numbers of African-Americans than Hayes can muster). This is not to say there aren't contradictions around immigration issues, but Hayes is not a serious spokesman for anything except himself.
But I suppose the Anti-Immigrant coalition can now claim to have some African-American leadership with them on this issue. Perhaps, Hayes should look really closely at these new found friends of his. History is going to show him that he was wrong. Very wrong. But just as the Republican party trots out its minority membership come camera time... I am sure the Minutemen will do the same with Hayes.
