Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio turns 81 next week, and he's taking
the time to recognize a victim of discrimination -- himself.
Never mind the recent federal court ruling that said the Phoenix-area sheriff was unfairly targeting Latinos in his notorious "crime suppression" sweeps.
Arpaio says he'll increasingly focus on age discrimination as he
continues his fifth term as sheriff, and as he plans for a sixth.
He counts himself among the people looked down upon because of their age.

Ah, well, Joe, nice try. But, you were an asshole when you were young, too.
I look down on him for other reasons.
His belief that he can be mendacious in defense of his prejudices and right to interpret the law as he sees fit is an economic failure. The money Maricopa County has lost in lawsuits and a larger than life personal security detail are indicative of an exaggerated feeling of self-importance than danger in the real world. Oddly, enough Arizonans buy his bluster, expense and bull as they ignore his unnecessary expense and violations of human rights.
And so I picture Joe Arpaio making his lonely way under the Arizona sunset, quoting his favorite poem:

I am the captain of my soul.
