The Social Security Debacle

Attaturk excerpted from Krugman's column below, and as one commenter says, Krugman is spot on. What I'm worried about is the slippery slope we're on having earlier bought into the discussion about the social security liquidity problem.

The question is whether respected economists like Krugman and honest politicians will be able to influence the debate enough to prevent a stampede. Given that some idiots in the press talk about social security as if it is already out of money, this is going to be quite a challenge.
