Mr. McCain came into the race promoting himself as a truth teller and has long publicly deplored the kinds of negative tactics that helped sink his candidacy in the Republican primaries in 2000. But his strategy now reflects a calculation advisers made this summer — over the strenuous objections of some longtime hands who helped him build his “Straight Talk” image — to shift the campaign more toward disqualifying Mr. Obama in the eyes of voters.
Even one of the GOP news organs, the NYT is concerned about the lies that McCain is telling. He lied and cheated in the past (say it with me... Keating Five! Keating Five!) and he will lie and cheat in the present.
But will it make a difference with the public? Will people even know the truth if almost everything they hear are the lies?
This demonstrates yet again, why we need serious campaign finance reform, including an independent review system for campaign commercials, and the return of the equal time clause for the media.
