Gearheaded

I follow too many sports -- with varying levels of enthusiasm -- but this is a great turn-of-a-phrase from Charles Pierce and one I can appreciate:

NASCAR's quiet this weekend, so if you need your hydrocarbon fix, it's Formula One's season opener from Bahrain, or the IRL from Sao Paulo. The first five Formula One races this season are in, respectively: Bahrain, Australia, Malaysia, China, and Spain. Must be tough to follow that circuit in your tricked-out RV's.

The things I notice about Formula 1 --

First, there's a hell of a lot less "excitement" in the way of passing in a F1 race.

Second, it's good to see a huge waste of fuel without it sounding like redneck roundtable.

Third, it's a technological marvel -- so how come it is the last sport without being broadcast in HD?

I have lost my identity and don't know how to get it back thanks to this new posting thing. Password should work but won't. Vox

Car goes fast! Vroom vroom, brrrmmmm, brrrmmmm, skreeee!

Sorry, I just can't get enthusiastic over motor "sports" myself. But then, I'm an effete liberal elitist.

F1 is far more interesting than watching rednecks driving dinosaur-tech high-speed trains around ovals in the South.

Was an F1 fan until the final race at Indy (I was there and witnessed the fiasco). Like just about any other pro sport, it ain't what it used to be...

Heh... from a hardcore motorsports fan, thanks for this posting. NASCAR is just an extension of the traditional county fair horse racing on oval tracks... I love it because it is more about endurance racing than anything else, and the science of keeping them cars on-track at 190mph is exhilarating.

However, open-wheel is my drug of choice, and F1 is the pinnacle of modern technological racing. Ya sometimes it can be tedious, but last year's was the best season in a decade, with real racing at almost every venue! 2010 may be even better.

The IndyCar race from Sao Paolo was a lesson in hard-nosed road racing with inclement weather, weirdo track conditions and varying levels of talent behind the wheel. Methinks their 2010 season will be a barn-burner. This series may get back on the radar again in this year.

A quote attributed to Ernest Hemingway goes: "There are only three true sports -- bullfighting, deep-sea fishing and motor racing. Everything else is just a game."
