The Rightwing is enraged at the choice of Meirs, just beside themselves.
As KOS notes David Frum called Meirs essentially a moronic toady and then deleted it, and much of the rest of the right wing is enraged. Bush was supposed to give them a good slavering Bork-type to get excited about. Instead, Bush goes with a unknown entity, whose allegiance to Bush is all they know. She could be a Souter or even worse (and there is nothing worse to them really -- Bin Laden has nothing on how much they dislike Souter [unless its how much they decide they dislike Kennedy - they are strange that way]). His political prospects have evaporated that quickly. Seeking to avoid a fight with the Left, he's disgusted the Right.
After all the cronie scandals, the scandal-plagued Bush Administration becomes increasingly tone-deaf and nominates a complete and utter croanie to the Supreme Court.
Will she be confirmed? I don't know -- should she be? Probably not. But the discomfort of the Right is beautiful to behold.
