Better than Perry whining about not getting enough magic Federal fire suppression unicorns while slashing Texas state funding to fire departments ? Nah.

Perry redefines being a major league corporate prick. Eric Ivan, eat your corroded parsimonious heart out.

And speaking of 9-11, rarely is the question asked...

"You know that Air Force, the institution that US taxpayers pay all those gazillions of dollars for? What the fuck were THEY doing on 9-11?"

And, even more rarely:

"Have the USAF ever stood up and said, "You know, we really fucked up. Sorry, America."

The Years of Shame

Is it just me, or are the 9/11 commemorations oddly subdued?

Actually, I don’t think it’s me, and it’s not really that odd.

What happened after 9/11 — and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not — was deeply shameful. The atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons.

A lot of other people behaved badly. How many of our professional pundits — people who should have understood very well what was happening — took the easy way out, turning a blind eye to the corruption and lending their support to the hijacking of the atrocity?

The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.

Krugman indeed nails it.
He's a one of the few voices of character among a corrupt elite.

That is my question also, which I have never seen in print --
"Where the fuck was our $200 billion a year Air Force?".

Why didn't they have any effective air defenses over the national capital over an hour after the first plane was hijacked, when AA77 hit the Pentagon?

Or as a Canadian conservative friend of mine commented last night over beers, "What the fuck was NORAD doing?"

The Air Force is all about expensive toys.

What were they doing on 9-11? The same thing they're always doing.

"Daddy, could you buy me (another) a fleet of billion dollar aircraft?"

what was the Air Force doing? Well, they were involved in 'training simulations' that took most of the NE air protection out of the picture... pretty convenient, yes?

fwiw, there usually aren't this many training ops ongoing at the same time, and they would never leave the entire eastern seaboard uncovered...particularly the DC and NY areas...
