The Collective Shrug

We're one brave political system aren't we?
The State Department on Monday reassigned Daniel Fried, the special envoy for closing the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and will not replace him, according to an internal personnel announcement. Mr. Fried’s office is being closed, and his former responsibilities will be “assumed” by the office of the department’s legal adviser, the notice said.
In another decade it'll still be there more than likely, because no politician will do the right thing. Eventually some person probably picked up in Afghanistan will be the last prisoner there, wandering around like Rudolf Hess at Spandau.

Fifty or sixty years from now, or when we run out of money to keep pretending it's legal, or when the Cubans overpower us, or when the world ends, whichever comes first.

I had forgotten that Hess spent his last 19 years in Spandau by himself.

I'd call that some justice for his extreme crimes, because that's an extremely LOOOONG time to be in this semi-solitary state.
