The Iraq war is a test of wills from which the US Army will grow stronger as it seeks to transform itself into a 21st century fighting force, a top army general said.
General Peter Schoomaker, army chief of staff, refused however to guarantee that the US military would successfully defeat the ongoing insurgency and pave the way for a democratic Iraqi government to take power.
"There's nobody dumb enough to stand up here and guarantee anything," he said in a speech at the Heritage Foundation think tank.*
Hmmm, we better look to somebody who is:
"The terrorists will do all they can to delay and disrupt free elections in Iraq ,and they will fail," the president said. "Free elections will proceed as planned...
"We'll help the Iraqi government build a force that no longer needs coalition support, so they can defend their own nation and then American soldiers and Marines can come home with the honor they have earned."
*Although I might add, c'mon you are at the Heritage Foundation and you cannot find somebody that dumb?
