More Thoughts on the Grammys and Amy

Winehouse winning Best New Artist was for some the best moment of the whole  night, this past Sunday. The slow look of surprise that spread across her face, and then the  tears that followed for many who watched the telecast was one of the most genuine moments.

And I agree.

While I may not get the interest shown her, I can appreciate the effort to make a different sound.  I can't understand the acrimony displayed toward her as a person. Everyone complains about the lack of authenticity in modern pop music and whether we love or hate Winehouse, we do have to give some credit for a new effort.

We at least should give the music a chance, which is why I have listened repeatedly to her album, watched her perform numerous times, and given the music -- as much as I can -- a fair shot.

While her live performances swing wildly, some music fans think she's a fantastic singer -- her tone, her phrasing, her range.  I will acknowledge that she's quite a songwriter (assuming she does write her own stuff which is often a bit mixed up in the music industry).  The lyrics to many of the songs on Back to Black are sometimes witty and often quite perceptive.

The problem, for me, is that there really isn't much there to catch my interest. And the focus on the person is mixed up with the music. Come on, this perspective is the Valium slur/stupidity as a persona is not cute, but face it, Courtney Love has that act beat all to Hell and has the Grammy on that side of things wrapped up.

Does anyone really think Winehouse would have gotten the slightest glance from the Grammy idiots if not for the train wreck of a life that was covered in every news outlet 24-7?  Only Brittany has more coverage.  And we all can see where that is headed.  And what does any of this "coverage" tell us about the music, nothing.
