One of the less scintillating milestones of the 2012 election was marked by the General Services Administration, when Mitt Romney became the first candidate to take advantage of the Presidential Transition Act of 2010...Could have used that money for car elevators.
... The GSA says final costs are still being tabulated, but the initial estimated cost for Romney’s pre-transition phase is around $8.9 million.

fiscal fail.
When I first heard about this, it just screamed out "boondoggle!" to me. Why on earth give money to a candidate for transition costs before he's won? And, it's not as if there's not enough time to do it after the election (with modern communications and all, and a new President can't actually send appointments to Congress until he's inaugurated, anyway). Has to be some other reason, and I'm betting that it's to transfer information to the candidate that can be used in the campaign.
Using taxpayer money to do it just adds insult to injury.
Far out. My daughter was laid off by the GSA this week due to "financial difficulties." I'm so glad that all that dough was available for the Romney transition.
