Stock markets across Asia plunged on fears that a U.S. recession will cut demand for exports.

Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng index fell 5.4 percent, Japan's Nikkei index dropped 4.7 percent and Singapore's Straits Times index tumbled 3.5 percent.
