He'd say, "fuck it, I'm switching parties"

Linda Greenhouse, writing about the odious Arizona "Your Papers Please" law asks a pretty damn fine rhetorical question:

What would Arizona's revered libertarian icon, Barry Goldwater, say about a law that requires the police to demand proof of legal residency from any person with whom they have made "any lawful contact" and about whom they have "reasonable suspicion" that "the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States?" Wasn't the system of internal passports one of the most distasteful features of life in the Soviet Union and apartheid-era South Africa?

He'd complain and raise holy hell and call 'em all about of gutless cowards (see 4 minutes in).

And, in the same location I saw this quote, Steven Benen has a reader ask another obvious question:

Just a question I haven't heard anybody ask: Shouldn't the tea party crowd be having a cow over this new immigration bill that Arizona just passed? Doesn't that sound like big government tyranny to them? Giving the police the power to demand "papers" from someone just on their own suspicion?

Any chatter from the tea party folk to this effect? I haven't seen any.

Well this one is easy, the vast number of the Teapartiers believe in the 3/5ths Clause, as long as only non-whites have to show their papers they're okay with it. The logical extension of it meaning they can be stopped an inquired into by a cop is something they cannot comprehend as a white person carrying a firearm.

"Big government for thee (especially if swarthy in color), but not for me (Ya'all see, Ima white person, ipso facto, no problemo)."*

* Tea Party motto.

I do believe that they actually think that the 3/5 clause is far too generous and that all those nasty brown skinned folks really do not constitute any more than 2/5 (maximum!) of a human being.

I'm looking forward to all the chest-beating over Mexico issuing a travel advisory if traveling to Arizona...

Well, at least they haven't come up with making legal aliens ID themselves by wearing a yellow Star of David or something more appropriate.

Oh oh. Maybe I've said too much. Hope no AZ republicans lurk here.

And right here in Iowa we have this 3/5th-er running in the 3rd District:

TOLEDO, Iowa -- A Republican congressional candidate said he supports inserting microchips into illegal immigrants to track their movements, noting that's how he keeps track of his dog.
Speaking at a forum Monday in Toledo, 3rd District Republican candidate Pat Bertroche argued that police should catch illegal immigrants and document their whereabouts. He then added that he would "support micro-chipping them.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports he then continued, "I can microchip my dog so I can find it. Why can't I microchip an illegal?"

Teatards don't hate Big Government. They're quite happy to have an authoritarian police state as long as it has a handy exclusion for Special People like them while harasssing groups they don't like. Policy by solipsism.

I could see them being quite happy in apartheid-era South Africa.

in an interview, a pundit tried to excuse goldwater (despite having voted for previous civil rights bills) voted against the '64 civil rights act because he relied on rehnquist's advise. uh, relying on a dick isn't a mark of character either.
