Now here's a campaign platform...

"We've got to build more aircraft carriers...out of grandma's medicare."

It was likely inevitable that when tax increases on wealthy corporations and individuals were dismissed that budget battles would come down to sacrificing social spending in favor of the military. The sort of military Keynesianism that prevailed until 1981 simply can't be sustained without revenues.

For the last thirty years, the government was willing to entertain debt in order to keep the fiction going, but, now that the deficit disaster-mongers are in control, something had to give, and in the current environment, it was bound to be social spending. Not including war spending, we're probably spending at least five times peacetime requirements on all aspects of so-called defense. That can't be sustained when the government won't even raise taxes during a time of war--unless social spending goes out the window.

Yet one more indication that we're in the shit and it's getting deeper every day. We're already a failed empire and no one wants to admit it. We're going to end up the largest new impoverished banana republic in the world because we're too proud to admit that we fucked up and let the aristocrats run the country into the ground.

This is the winning rhetoric from a Republican strategist?

This has been the plan all along. After the fall of the Soviet Empire, we needed more boogiemen. Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, Barack Obama (referred to as Osama by a coterie of mendacious trolls), and ALWAYS any government function that is not related to DOD, oil/gas. big Ag and big Pharma fat cats. Let's not forget Wall Street: 1/3 of the U.S. budget goes to interest payments on debt (substantially created by GW Bush).

Pigs at the fucking trough.
