Rising Hegemon
Eight-term Rep. Mark Souder will announce his resignation Tuesday after it came to light that he was conducting an affair with a female staffer who worked in his district office, Fox News has learned.
Multiple senior House sources indicated that the extent of the affair would have landed Souder before the House Ethics Committee.
Elected as a family values conservative as part of the Republican revolution in 1994, Souder survived a tough re-election challenge in 2008 and survived a contested primary two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Jon Ensign continues on.

Josh Marshall reports that it turns out Souder recently recorded a pro-abstinence video with the woman he was shagging extra-maritally.

Souder gave 16 years of leading by family-value example. That's enough. Give someone else a chance.
Hopefully they didn't keep the camera rolling for the after-party. Full-frontal Souder is a dish best skipped.
This used to be a competitive district, but I think it was redistricted in 2000 to be more GOP friendly. Our primaries are over, and Souder's not running. Depending upon how the election rules shake out, this could be a very unexpected Dem pick-up. His challenger is Tom Hayhurst who gave him a good run in 2006.
i guess a female staffer is worse than wearing diapers for a prostitute.
i used to wonder what that would have looked like if clinton resigned and al gore took over the rest of the term, if executive experience would have helped give him a leg up running for prez in 2000.
Either he is not a real Republican like Diaper Dave Vitter or John Ensign or he wants to close the door before we find out he was doing her brother, too.
Ah, well, he's gonna come out of this okay. His wife will forgive him and he'll have a leg up on everyone else trying to lobby for the picnic table industry....
Is all this "leg up" stuff some kind of veiled sexual imagery? Especially when you toss in the picnic table and their usual trysting location of local state parks? Oh God, I did not need that vision seered into my brain...
I don't get it. The girl is still alive? And he's *still* resigning? I thought the standard was, "sex with a dead girl or live boy" was all that would force a Republican politician to resign? Huh, let me check to make sure the sun is still rising in the East!

Nah, he's no Democrat. A Democrat would have wept while making the resignation speech.
