Putting on My Political Strategy Beanie

Because who else would know political strategy better than an anonymous smartass?

OK, so the 9/11 Report really hit on Congress and suggested substantial internal reform; committee reassignments, designations etc. This, of course, is a threat to the seniority system.

The Democrats getting control of the House this year, while not impossible, is a bit of a long-shot. Why not take a page out of Gingrich's book and take the lead in reform?

In the mode of "Contract with America" have all Democratic House Members and candidates, including the leadership, sign the "Covenant of Responsibility and Values" (or some such name) and promise to enact the recommendations of the Commission without reservation?

The GOP majority is not going to give much more than sound and fury to these things, their chairman are not going to cede power. A minority party has NO POWER and their only ability to exercise it is to get power. Why not play long ball and engage in good policy and good politics at the same time?

-- Gives the Dems a leg up in their one weak area, security.

Seems like a great idea to me.
