Um...hooray?;
Why did we invade again?
Today's London Observer has this story again undermining a frequent right-wing talking point.
Downing Street has admitted to The Observer that repeated claims by Tony Blair that '400,000 bodies had been found in Iraqi mass graves' is untrue, and only about 5,000 corpses have so far been uncovered.
The claims by Blair in November and December of last year, were given widespread credence, quoted by MPs and widely published, including in the introduction to a US government pamphlet on Iraq's mass graves.
In that publication - Iraq's Legacy of Terror: Mass Graves produced by USAID, the US government aid distribution agency, Blair is quoted from 20 November last year: 'We've already discovered, just so far, the remains of 400,000 people in mass graves.'
So let's go down the roll again:
(1)Saddam has Weapons of Mass Destruction -- Nope.
(2)Saddam is a threat to the United States via ties to Al Qaeda -- Nope.
(3)Saddam is six months away from developing nuclear weapons -- Nope.
(4)Saddam was an imminent threat to its neighbors -- Nope.
(5)The Iraqi people will uniformly welcome us with flowers and sweets -- Nope.
(6)The invasion will pay for itself -- Nope.
(7)Iraq will quickly become a democratic state -- Nope.
(8)We have more than enough troops in Iraq to maintain peace
and we can quickly reduce their numbers to a few thousand within
a year -- Nope.
(9)Iyad Allawi is a good guy who is committed to Democracy
and avoiding Human Rights Abuses -- Nope
(10)OK, maybe not so many WMD but we all thought that way at a time -- Nope (Bush and Blair knew the mobile weapons labs were lies).
(11)Saddam was a mass murderer in comparison to Pol Pot -- Nope.
OK, next lie...whatever comes out of Bush's, Blair's, Cheney's mouth.
